🏀 🏀 #2 Alabama at Texas 🏀 - Alabama Cruises Past Texas, 103-80

I guess I will have to be the negative one and complain about 17 turnovers and giving up 50 points in the 2nd half. Against elte teams this will not get it done. You are also not going to hit 17 3's often. On a positive note they hit the century mark and a lot of players made 3's.

I will say Texas was way too dominant on the O boards than I'd like. Same thing happened vs Arkansas last game. Guys just get buys ball watching and don't box out. Tre Johnson is a baller for Texas though. Wish we had unlimited NIL to get whoever we want.

Our length gave Texas a ton of issues on D. Think they started pretty hot, but Stevenson locked down Johnson and you saw them go on a drought.

The Crimson Tide won its seventh consecutive game setting up a top-ranked in-state showdown vs. No.1/2 Auburn this Saturday

AUSTIN, Texas –
Sophomore Jarin Stevenson scored a career high 22 points to help No. 2/1 Alabama cruise past Texas 103-80 Tuesday night at the Moody Center. The Crimson Tide (21-3, 10-1 SEC) connected on a SEC season best 17 three-pointers while shooting 59 percent (17-of-29) from beyond the arc in the victory.

Stevenson finished the contest hitting 7-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-5 from deep in just 20 minutes of action to lead five UA players in double figures. Aden Holloway came off the bench to score 18 points, while Mark Sears (18), Labaron Philon (15) and Mouhamed Dioubate (13) also reached double digits in the 23-point victory.

The Longhorns (15-10, 4-8 SEC) were led by Tre Johnson who finished with a game high 24 points while Jayson Kent added 19.

Head Coach

"This was a game where you wish you could shoot it like this all the time. We almost shot 60 percent from three and 62 percent from the field, so we spent a lot of time in the gym and when you get some open looks and knock them down, it helps the game go the way you want. We had way too many turnovers again and that has become a major issue with us, but you have to give Texas a lot of credit. They got into us and were physical and they forced some turnovers, and I thought they played hard, we just had Mouhamed Dioubate go three-of-three (from three) who they decided to leave open. We know Jarin (Stevenson) can really shoot it and has not shot it this well in a game this year, but he did have five three's to send us to the Final Four last year when we beat Clemson in the Elite Eight so he has stepped up in big games before and he ends up with a career-high. He (Stevenson) has been playing real physical and great defense and he was our first matchup on Tre Johnson, who was leading the league in scoring and I thought he did a pretty good job for the most part. We were fortunate to get these two wins on the road but now we got to lock in because we have a pretty tough stretch with these last seven games coming up."

Team Stats

  • Alabama improved to 6-0 in road SEC contests this season and captured its eighth consecutive league road win
  • The Tide hit the century mark for the fourth time in SEC play and seventh time on the year
  • Alabama extended its SEC record to eight straight games scoring 85 points or more on the road

Fans: If they play like this against the top teams ...

I'm going to change one letter, add another. 🙃

Facts: IF they shoot 58.6% from behind the arc along with 61.8% from the field while topping that off with 90% from the charity stripe they'll beat anyone in the nation on any given night. 1.43 PPP. Geez.

I would not expect Alabama, nor Duke, 'utterly' anyone to have those numbers and lose.

While we're on the TO subject again ...

Has anyone stopped for a minute and looked back at previous seasons? How closely do the comments today (about Sears) resemble those made about JQ when he was in Tuscaloosa?

Some of this was we simply did not secure the ball on some rebounds and the refs allowed a little hand slapping to happen. I think once our guys realized this they fixed it and played well.

Texas was also down a large number and started shooting more threes as well, so you have to roll all that together. The game was never close in the second half. No lull like in Fayetteville.

I will reiterate that I am not a basketball guy. I know a little about the game and I understand certain concepts, but I don't watch it often. But I see this as being like a gunslinger quarterback. Maybe he throws 18 interceptions in a season. But he also threw for 5600 yards and 42 TDs, and the team went 12-2. The TOs wouldn't be that big of a deal. If Bama is winning, is ranked in the top 3, and is beating good SEC teams on the road on a consistent basis, then this is a very good team. Certainly they have flaws. But every team has flaws, so it's just a matter of who can overcome their flaws better.

Got curious:

A tougher schedule this year by far. Personal fouls called against Bama? This season, through the same number of games as last season, they've been called 20 less times. Rolltide.com doesn't keep track of last seasons fouls against Bama from opponents so I don't have an exact number: just the season total. But, this season opponents are averaging five less fouls per game called against them this season than last.

Tougher teams, tougher schedules ... the numbers tell me the officials are calling games differently this season; they are letting them "play" more often.

(It's a different scenario as well if we're getting down to the nuts and bolts ... Bama being able to go with a bigger lineup.)

Statistically, we're at an average of 13.4. I think that puts us as one of the better teams under Oats in not turning it over.

That said, last three games, we've averaged 17, which puts us at 300th in the country. 15.8 in the last five games.

I don't think I'm being a pessimist when pointing it out as a legit concern. I think it's one of few problems this team has. That said, we're 21-3 and tied for first place in the SEC. This team is deep and elite.

I do wish we could get Reid back to really have another big body for preventing 2nd chance opportunities. That's been a problem the last two games.

That's not what I was driving at, but it fits with what I remember.

JQ: He was criticized often for the same things Mark is being criticized for today. Some of it is legitimate because they both lose control at times. However, both of these guys do one thing that no one else provides.

How often do we see Sears driving the lane in what looks to be the mouth of the defense? Now, how often do we see anyone else on the team do the same? Who else fulfills that role of being and to dribble and drive (penetrate) those defenses? Yeah. No one. It was the same with JQ. (Holloway is getting there and should fill that role next season.) When he's not running the offense, where that's one of the first moves the Oats offense runs, the Bama guys look like they are standing on pedestals: lifeless, almost.

Another of those "reasons" that's seldom discussed...he's taking a physical beating down there. Thankfully, and kudo's to him, he's "built" for it more this season than last.

Oh, and one side note ...

People have pointed to Grant having more turnovers. He's playing a different game this year where we are seeing more big to big than we've seen. Down there, turnovers are going to happen.

One last thought this morning: Take the good with the bad.

Fans: Look at the number of guys rotating!
Fans: Look at the number of turnovers.

With so many fresh bodies in a game...chemistry in that game isn't a given. The feature of depth, and it isn't a good one, is that you don't have the same chemistry as you would just playing six or seven.
