You may not have caught this either...

Men's indoor track finishes second in the SEC with its highest point total since the early 1980's.

Some perspective for those of you who don't follow track much: The winner of the SEC meet is usually poised to compete for a national title. Alabama lost to Arkansas by 3 points. (Arkansas is to track as Alabama is to football.)

Alabama got 25 points from the distance squad, I think and this is from memory since I meant to post this a couple of days ago but we've been traveling. That's if you include the 800 and I do consider that "distance". That's been unheard of recently for Alabama. An Alabama athlete won the 200. One got second in the pole vault -good for eight points, and again, out of the "norm" for Alabama track. Alabama also got points in the 60 hurdles and it wasn't from anyone named Tony Brown or Marlon Humphreys. Why would that even be mentioned? Those two guys, a few years ago, were two of the top three hurdlers IN THE COUNTRY coming out of high school.

Some people coaching track at Alabama know what in the hell they are doing!

Alabama will not stack up quite as well at the national meet. However, most anyone will take second in the SEC. I would guess any sport at Alabama except football would be pleased with this result.

The women finished 6th overall. Again, great result.

Kind of interesting, so I thought I'd share a little more info on the National Indoor Track meet.

Alabama's women finished sixth in the SEC. The top five are predicted to finish numbers 2-6. That's how insanely talented and deep the SEC is on the women's side. Alabama's women though may not finish seventh, as one might think. Oregon's women will win their seventh title in the last eight years. Yes, they will win again. It won't be close. In a quirky twist of fate, Oregon will win without a single point coming from the "field" side of "track and field". They will kill the running events.

On the men's side, it looks as though Florida could win it all. That's right. The team that finished third in the SEC. Track is weird like that. Alabama will probably finish somewhere in the neighborhood of 7th. Not too shabby.

If you want to witness greatness in action, watch King Chez for Oregon. He could possibly account for 40 points, if you include the distance medley relay which he will likely run, and he'll do it in impressive fashion in distance - the mile, the 3,000, and the 5,000 (that's 25 laps around the little indoor track).

Good stuff, @uagrad93. Competed, coached, drove the bus. I went to my first track meet in 1982.

Around the time you were considering Bama and just starting at Alabama, I had been running with a guy that wanted to run at Alabama, I think because I was such a huge fan it sort of rubbed off on him. They wouldn't give him enough money for him to afford matriculating in Tuscaloosa which was out of state. After taking a scholarship elsewhere, he went on to become an All-American and never lost to an Alabama runner. After meets he always went to their tent, said hi to the coach, and made sure he never forgot. That's not an indictment on UA. It's tough balancing scholarship limits for a minor sport, and I guess they figured they could spend money elsewhere and get more points for the SEC meet. Track and cc are about as minor a sport as there is. Coaches do the best they can with what they have.

Oh the stories we both have I'm sure.

@TheChief , we were in T'town for the state track and field championships when all of the Mike Price stuff was blowing up, press conference to announce firing, etc. I told the other coach that I was going to go for a walk and that I'd be back. I walked over to the Bryant Conference Center, mingled with a few players, and then watched the presser LIVE!!!

After Day 1, the Alabama women find themselves in second place overall, trailing Georgia 41-16. That will be the last of Georgia's points since they don't have a competitor qualified for any running events. Remember who I said would win the women's title? Oregon. They don't have a single point...yet.

Bama's men are in 19th place. Teams should make some big moves tomorrow on the men's side.

Karisa Nelson of Samford wins the mile! King Chez of Oregon beaten in the mile!

Bama's women now sit third, men 27th. Oregon's women picked up 20 points in the 60 m, while Bama's Burkes finishes 7th.

Looks like Alabama's women finish third overall!!!!

Men 8th!

Oregon won the men's and the women's titles. Oregon's men finished .5 point ahead of Florida, if the review of the men's 4x400 stands.
Correction, after the review of the 4x400 - the Aggies won the men's title - after the review of the 4x400 gave A&M that relay win. Never changed that result last night.
