🏀 Bama and 2018-19 Bracketology

Coach Johnson said, "This was not one of our better nights. We turned the ball over 18 times on the road and allow 28 points of turnovers and then get outrebounded, then you're going to have a tough time winning." Well, there's a profound thought. Like @alabama mike said, too much of a yo-yo team lately.

Well I said likely 4-4 that would probably be the one:). Arkansas is 5-5 in SEC play so it is not like it is impossible. This is not the Arkansas of old. I could not find their home/road record in sec play but they are 10-4 at home overall and something like 3-4 away.

Predicting that SEC finish may be the safest bet since Secretariat won the Belmont by 31 lengths.

2015-16 - 8-10
2016-17 - 10-8
2017-18 - 8-10
2018-19 - 6-5

After every game CAJ's excuses.............The other team had more energy, we didn't play our best game, we didn"t have a good night, etc., etc., etc...
My question is???????? Who's ???? fault is that?????? It's unbelievable the amount of talent on this team and the results we are seeing.

Sorry to interrupt the doom and gloom for a minutes...

This morning finds the Tide in 100% of the brackets on Bracket Matrix.
Wont make it past first round unless...something changes drastically...
This could be a sweet 16 team....but....
1..... they most suceed at the charity stripe
2...... they have got to take better shots...
3...... turnover rate decrease
4...... play as a team...not 20 feet from basket... or under basket...outmanned
...you say well...YEAH.....that goes for most teams....but most teams dont have
this quality of player....all this is possible @Tennesee was good example
We shall see

This board is full of doom and gloom and Debbie Downers. I'm not sure what some of you expect we are not a Final Four team. We were picked preseason to finish 7th in the SEC. We are actually a little better than I expected. The GSU game was a meltdown and we got beat on a miracle shot by TAM otherwise this season has gone about as expected. We are beating ranked teams under CAJ which we did not do under CAG. This team is what it is. If you don’t like the product don’t watch it.

It's my opinion a lot of people view basketball under the same scope as they do football. Insights and opinions which overtime conflict each other, ya know? It's looked at as a game, versus a season.

Not sure how far you go back, but Bama basketball has been a lot better in my lifetime. No, we are not a final four team, the problem is that we are not a final 4 team in the SEC. That is getting to be the problem. I look at Avery and with his charm and recruiting see a 5-year expiration date on his forehead.

The unknown is this FBI sting that has led the NCAA to take a hard look at programs bidding on players. It sounds like the bell will toll soon for the Arizona HC. Bill Self has been just too successful. Kansas would just take their medicine and swallow hard. But all of the Avery Johnsons of college basketball would never stand the scrutiny. That could also speed up the process.

No. They aren't likely a final four team. It would take a run—ironically, a run we've seen many a time in the NCAA's—for the Tide to reach the final four. Highly unlikely, but not impossible.

Now, "not a final four in the SEC?" You won't find any disagreement that the SEC is a "three teams at the top" conference this season.

However, you can't point to a team now and say "that's a team that's better than Bama in the SEC race." The Tide is tied for fifth in the conference. UofSC is one game ahead of them and they still have to play. Ole Miss is a game up, but losses in a tie-breaker to the Tide.

This year's Tide team is better today, 2/14/19, than it was a year ago today. Better in the SEC and NCAA races. Better overall. And, it's a stronger conference.

You've mentioned this twice in the last 24 hours but there's no statistical measurement or ranking that supports the idea. It's lost on me what you're driving at here.

My drive is.....easy.....Bama basketball players are not the problem.....getting them to play as a team is the problem....whether its coaching or chemistry....
I dont know....but these guys are athletic enough to be a very good...
My take from small sample of games i have watched on tv or been to...
Small sample i admit terry

Players come into the program at Bama only to never improve for the most part. What is the deal on Petty?

Not thrilled with out ball handling ability and our inconsistency but players have improved greatly. Donta halls game has evolved since arriving. John petty last year was a spot up shooter completely last year and this year is a much better defender, a capable ball handler, and can get the hole now. Dazon has evolved from a non shooter to a complete player and a high percentage 3 point shooter.

I will be the first to criticize some of the other stuff but you also have to give them credit several of the guys have really improved and we went from 0-21 versus ranked team to I think 14-11 since he took over

to never improve for the most part.
but players have improved greatly.
Players, and as a team.

Just as one example looking at Ken Pom's offensive efficiency ratings. Offense, mind you, when we're not so far removed from people complaining about scoring and shooting:

YearOffensive Efficiency
2016164
2017152
2018106
2019currently 46th.

Just a comparative graph based on what I'm reading

Your Yo Yo basketball team as described:

10756

The basketball team based on performance:

10757

Not only does that show improvement, it graphs where's its seen in preseason non-conference play, and charts the improvement during conference play.

Most of the conversations about the Bama team on this thread has a lot more to do with the state of the program as it stands after 4 years and little to do if we could possibly sneak into the 4 seed this tourney.

We are not breaking through with our talent and it's frustration and will continue to be frustrating when we play .500 basketball in the league. But for the record, we have some good coaches in the SEC who are recruiting at a much higher level. My Top for 4 teams this season, regardless of whether we happen to beat them or not:

Tennessee
LSU
Kentucky
Auburn

They are built and coached for results and look like the more sustainable teams in our league over the long haul. Wade down at LSU in a newcomer, but you could see the stockpiling of talent the last 2 recruiting cycles and the guy has them playing unafraid.

Barnes at Tennessee doesn't have a 5* or McDonald All-American on his team. He also doesn't have a team that's going to implode every year with the NBA draft. Much different strategy than what he took at Texas. He's doing this with an extremely well-coached system and tough-minded players.

Auburn is sustainable if Pearl doesn't get blown out of the water by external circumstances. Which for him is 90% of the game. But he can coach and recognizes how to put the pieces together no matter who's on the court and he plays in a cracker box that he has energized into a true home advantage. What's that worth?

Kentucky is Kentucky.

All of these teams are establishing an identity and style that allows them to compete on a higher and more consistent level than our basketball team. I don't think we're trending anywhere near where they look like they are heading.

Has coach Johnson built a top 25 basketball team after 4 years? No
