🏈 As discussed on the recruiting forum ... Gehrig Dieter to Bama ...

After a quick glance at that video that @Birdman37 just posted it looks like Dieter was playing a lot of the X position. He's looking at a position move to Y, or Z if things line up like I suspect they will.

Impressive control here:

What are the responsibility differences for the various WR positions? and how difficult it is for a WR to move from one to the other? Maybe one of the coaches on here could share some insight to those like me who are just fans, but will admit they have no real experience with how difficult it is to change.

Inquiring minds want to know....

The biggest change for Dieter (assuming I'm calling this correctly) is whom he's going to be facing. The X is facing a pure corner, you move to the Z (what we saw called a flanker for years) and you're likely to draw a safety or OLB.

I strongly suspect the match-up the staff is looking at with Gehrig is having a WR going up against someone in the LB corps. BUT, he's crossing the middle now more than he has been.

I have NO coaching experience. N.O.N.E.

As a former UA QB, @uagrad93 can break this down a little more. Kev ...

Long story short, you are looking for mismatches and the flanker or Z position gives you that mismatch. It is another version of having OJ lined up on a safety in the Natty Title game. Getting man coverage with this matchup will make any QB salivate like Pavlov's dog and have Kiffin signaling TD on the snap!

Every play has a pre snap read. You are looking for hints in coverage and mismatches. Sending a man in motion is one way to forcing the D to tip their coverage, tight corners, deep safeties are others. If they are in regular personnel on D versus our normal 3 WR 1TE set, they will have to either drop a safety down or widen an OLB out to the Z. Oh the possibilities!!!

Crossing routes, corners, sluggo routes, option routes, will have these guys running loose in the secondary.

When I say "Oh, the possibilities!" I mean damn migraine headaches for DCs. Having the ability to flex OJ out 5-7 yds on one side with Stewart outside him and Ridley and Dieter on the other. HOLY S.H.I.T. the hurt Kiffin can put on a defense! Combination routes, the pump and go screen game, crossing routes, etc.

With those weapons, I'd love to call that offense!!!
