🏈 As discussed on the recruiting forum ... Gehrig Dieter to Bama ...

Is it official yet?

Feldman article indicates a waiver is still requited. I read elsewhere that it had to do with NCAA restrictions on transferring to 3 different 4 yr Universities and requires a waiver. My thought was that Luke Del Rio must have recently navigated these waters, so it's not unheard of.

Alabama lands MAC star WR transfer Gehrig Dieter

"Dieter...will need to get a waiver to become eligible. “We talked to the compliance people here and they felt pretty confident about (getting) the waiver,” Dieter told FOX Sports Saturday afternoon. “He said there have been like 45 people in my situation and they’ve all gotten approved."

Really like the idea of getting another experience WR in the mix. With Sims and Foster both coming off injuries and Charlot being completely unknown, makes sense to add another solid option. Plus a guy like this is coming for a reason... to win a title... all of the immature baggage that comes with young WR's will not be applicable.

It can't be official until he graduates from Bowling Green. (There certainly shouldn't be any backlash from BG like we saw with Dakota Prukop ... though that was FCS to FBS with the Montana State coach raising hell. BG had to give him permission to have contact with Bama.)

I haven't heard of the waiver requirement before but that's not real surprising when I think about the number of times I've paid attention to a transfer like this one. I don't think we can draw a comparison between Del Rio. That thought is based on the scholarship situation. Del Rio has been a three schools, but only two under scholarship. I may be wrong here but when I think about how the NCAA operates it would seem logical for it to revolve around grant-in-aid stipulations.

I'd love to know more about how that waiver works. I hate the idea of pulling up the NCAA manual and trying to find out how it works.

In the same bylaw section that covers the one time 4yr-4yr transfer rule, it addresses the exception for nonrecruited student athletes. They have to meet 3 conditions for exemption to the rule.

1. Can't have been previously recruited to the institution, which another section defines from having provided official visits, made off campus contact, initiated multiple phone calls, to having offered an NLI scholly.
2. Not received financial support as an athlete
3. No competed or participated in countable athletic activities for 14 consecutive days at previous institution

Depending on the interpretation of #3 and not knowing the recruitment activities of all institutions toward Del Rio, it appears he may have been subject to the same waiver req.

But, who knows? My guess is that any delay by the staff was due to running the traps on all of the above to avoid surprises. I just always hate leaving it to the NCAA to do what's right for the athlete.

His dad sent me a DM on Twitter after I posted the story on the site I write for (correcting my error about him having 2 years of eligibility) and giving "interesting facts" about his son lol

FYI he said Deiter will be in Tuscaloosa starting Thursday.
