🏀 NCAA Pres." "We HAVE to have a decision on tournament expansion before this year's tournament concludes." (It's now 78 proposed?!?!?)

He was just quoted on GameDay saying it was 78 or 76. But, what caught my attention was his timeline demands. That's unusual.

And, for the record, I don't see any reason to expand this tournament. It's not going to help the smaller schools. We are this close to seeing teams that are below .500 in conference play dancing in March. I can see this erasing the 20 win plateau mark and a 18-13 (overall) team like OU getting in (if it were this season.)

It's stupid. And they won't say it out loud, but it's all about the NCAA wanting to make more money since that is their cash cow.

In the last few weeks we've read and discussed an article about how the regular season title doesn't carry weight. In the last few hours I've heard commentators say, in essence, "in a day or two this loss won't matter...it's all about March."

BUT, let's expand the field? They are adding more games in March at the risk of the value of games in January and February.

The regular season title is for coaches’ bonuses

The tournament doesn't need to be expanded. Stop trying to fix something that isn't broke.
Just a thought ...

New Years Day. It was the college football day of the year. Now we have a playoff game on New Years Eve at 9 o'clock, national championship games at 9 on a Monday (where it's worth saying, "school night.") It wasn't broken. With the availabilty to watch games like we have today, how big would NYD be today if they didn't mess with ... something that wasn't broken.

Now.

How many of you guys have taken a day off to watch the first Thursday of the tournament? That whole weekend? If you say, "none," are you also going to tell me you didn't check scores? It is one of the biggest days of the year, that Thursday, of college basketball viewership. But no, let's add Tuesday games.

And now, but no, let's add ...

The more you have, the less valuable one becomes.

I used to have a TV in my gym and would always watch the first couple of games on Thursday and Friday.

Go back to 48, which is really too many. Let the season be the play in.

It's quality over quantity. The NCAA once again showcases they care not one bit about tradition or why people gravitate to college sports over professional. Viewership for the CFB playoffs seemed underwhelming. Bowl viewership, attendance, and player participation continues to plummet.

CFB to me already had a fundamentally flawed system in determining the best team. However because of its uniqueness, it still provided incentives for teams who didn't make it to the championship. Think about how much fans remember the 2006 Boise State team or the '08 Utes beating us. The bowl system provided special moments and provided week-to-week captivating moments.

What you just said too is spot on. The NCAA however only thinks what makes March Madness so special is the volume of upsets. And they think expanding it will increase viewers, which of course leads to higher $ in ad sales. It won't.

@OldPlayer This thought hit me out of the blue this morning.

A few years ago I was looking at coaching contracts and happened to come across the story of Curry and his contract with UA. He was the first for us, one of the first in collegiate sports, to have a contract written that had salary and things like appearance fees and compensation for the TV show.

I don't know for sure; just a guess here. If he was on the forefront of the way contracts are written today it wouldn't surprise me to find out he was the first to have bonuses built into his contract.

I'm almost positive Stallings received a bonus for '92.

I don't understand what you are saying. Bonuses for sports titles didn't exist when I was born. Regular season titles for SEC basketball existed before my mother was born.
I’m talking about why they still exist. “Winning” the conference by having the best record gets you a better seeding in the conference tournament. That’s all. But coaches will use that “championship” for a bonus criteria. It’s an incentive that is easier to achieve than winning a conference tournament. ADs will use it to sweeten their compensation offer.

"That's all?" It may be the case with some; I seriously doubt it is with all coaches. The same with fans.

I'm from the ilk that looks at two and a half months versus, at most, five days of winning basketball. (Frankly, I also think the auto-bid should be for the regular season. UGA is a great example of of such during the ATL/tornado tournament.)

Personally, I find it to be a BIG deal when you're looking at a team tipping off game one Friday afternoon versus what could be a noon tip-off on Wednesday.

(The SEC did do a better job scheduling this year for the tournament. If you are in the top part bracket and tip at noon on Wednesday, it's a noon tip for the winner on Thurs., Friday, Sat, and Sunday. On the other hand, if you are in that bottom part of the bracket it's an 8, 8, 8, 2, and then noon tip.)

I’m saying you don’t get a trophy for having the best record and the #1 seed in the conference tournament. Some schools will spin it as a championship but you can’t have two conference champions. Yes, you want the #1 conference seed for multiple reasons (opponent pairing, game times, possible NCAA tournament seeding), but is it really a championship?

@OldPlayer If you judge by a body of work and not a "Cliff's Notes" version of a team, yes, it is a Championship. It's 4X the body of work (# of games.)

IF a team can make a run like UGA did a few years ago they should get a shot at the dance more so than a non-champion mid-major (regular or tourney.) At the very least, that's a team for a play-in game, right?

As much as I hate the term "shared title" you'd think I'd think differently.
