Alabama hit the jackpot through the graduate transfer avenue a year ago.

Wide receiver Richard Mullaney caught 38 balls for 390 yards and five touchdowns playing a key role in helping the Crimson Tide to the National Championship.

Mullaney did so well that Nick Saban and his staff are dipping into that well again.

Bowling Green wide receiver Gehrig Dieter plans to be part of the Tide’s program as a graduate transfer.

Dieter will visit Alabama this weekend from Thursday through Saturday.

ā€œI’m looking forward to meet everyone and getting to know everybody and meeting all of the coaches and players,ā€ Dieter said.

Bowling Green just made a statement regarding Dieter’s release.

ā€œAll you have to do is look at the track record of their program and see that no other school can offer me that education while furthering my dream of playing in the NFL,ā€ Dieter said of Alabama.

Dieter said he received his permission contact form in early January. Since then he’s been in communication with Crimson Tide wide receivers coach Billy Napier.

ā€œHe told me they want me,ā€ Dieter said. ā€œHe seems like a pretty cool guy. I talked with him and feel that I can put in the work to make an impact in the classroom and on the field for the Tide. Coach Napier runs a tight knit group and I want to be apart of that."

Dieter said he spoke with Saban two weeks ago.

ā€œHe told me they are committed to making this work,ā€ Dieter said. ā€œHe said I have a great opportunity to earn a spot.ā€

Dieter said he visited Wake Forest two weekends ago but plans on enrolling at Alabama after he graduates from Bowling Green May 7 where he’ll have one season of eligibility.

As a redshirt junior, Dieter caught 94 balls for 1,033 yards and 10 touchdowns helping Bowling Green to a MAC championship.

As a redshirt sophomore, Dieter caught 35 balls for 460 yards and one touchdown.

As a freshman, he caught 10 balls for 168 yards and a touchdown at SMU. Dieter then sat out the year after due to transfer rules.

The 6-foot-3, 207-pounder runs a 4.5-second 40-yard dash.

He'll fit right in...

In addition to the longevity that Robertson would add, I wonder how much Deiter's track record played into the delay by the staff.

As I posted on the rant, he is certainly a talent.

He set the national single game receiving record in HS (which has been broken again since) and had just about every receiving record in Indiana history. Yet, he was only a 3 star and didn't get a ND offer in spite of being a South Bend kid.

Then, booted off SMU after 10 games before finally landing at BGSU.

If he is Bama bound, I hope he's seen the light or he may be in Tuscaloosa shorter than Mike Price

Booted? Where are you getting that from?

When I first came across his name I read up on him a bit. He transferred to BG from SMU because his position coach had left. BG had an offer extended to him from his Soph. or Jr. year and he would have ended up there originally if it wasn't for the late push from SMU—from that position coach.

Just purely on highlights, lanky receiver (6'3") but well built too (over 200 lbs.)... Good speed, crazy good hands, and athletic. Much better than just a possession receiver (ala Richard Mullaney). Reminds me of Kevin Norwood a bit... He, Ridley, Stewart, Foster, and Howard may be the most athletic bunch of receivers in the country. He was part of a pretty deadly offense at Bowling Green too, we're talking 90 catches, 1,000+ yards, 11 TD in an offense where another receiver had 1,5000 yards and another receiver had nearly 1,000 yards and a running back with over 1,300 yards rushing... Cant wait to see this kid.

I had heard he was interested in Bama and Saban made the comment that they wanted to pull in another receiver in the recruiting class, and IMO a graduate transfer with as much experience as he has with two more years of eligibility is like getting a Five Star Receiver. Still hope we can bring in a transfer at running back tho.

Ridiculous haircut tho lol

@Che Boludo

A former Parade All-American football player will transfer to Bowling Green State University to join the Falcons football program.

Gehrig Dieter, a wide receiver from South Bend, Ind., will enroll in classes at BG this winter after transferring from Southern Methodist University. Dieter made the announcement on Twitter Thursday and confirmed it in a phone interview.

ā€œI received an offer from Bowling Green after my sophomore year, and for a long time I planned to go there,ā€ Dieter said. ā€œThen I went to SMU, and shortly after I got there my position coach left, and I wasn’t happy there.

ā€œSo I’m coming back to Bowling Green, which is a great school, especially for a wide receiver. I’m ready to get there and start working.ā€

Per NCAA rules he will sit out the 2013 season but have three years of eligibility remaining starting the following season. NCAA rules prohibit Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson from commenting on Dieter’s transfer.

So you have zero evidence to suggest he has off the field issues other than he was "just a 3 star" (want me to link you to how many All Americans have been "three stars"? Ever heard of a guy called Mark Ingram?). Not to mention you are completely off about him being "booted" from SMU....

Booted was wrong of me to say as it was pure speculation on my part made from reading up on him between the articles at the time of his transfer and both ND and SMU boards. I certainly should have clarified that better.

He quoted lack of playing time once and his position coach at another time. Fans of ND said his attitude was poor and known in HS with rumors of the same at SMU (could be sour grapes).

He had managed to Crack the starting rotation as a FR after Darius Joseph's injury but after the third game and a nice start for a true frosh, something changed. With no injury, he only recorded stats in one more game and did not participate in 4 others.

Then, he says he wants to depart and his coach makes some calls vs. talking him into staying.

I was reading between the lines, but it seems more like an attitude issue that changed his playing time and likely influenced a mutual decision for his departure, which is a common story UA fans can relate to with some of our transfers.

Admittedly, I may be off on that assessment and will gladly retract it all if so. But it seems like a plausible deduction from what I've surfed through.

Sour grapes, or Domers being Domers? Wait. I'm not sure there's a difference.

Playing time and changing of a position coach likely went hand in hand. I don't know more than what I' read as well.

Based on the comments I've seen from his team mates he seems like he's a team guy. That's a plus, IMO.

I hope people don't get the idea we'll see a 1000 yard season out of him. There's simply not enough balls to go around.

For a timeline for you guys who are just hearing about him.

In an interview today his father said he's not sure who is more excited about the move to Tuscaloosa, Deiter, his mom, or his dad. Derek Dieter said "It's just a phenomenal opportunity for him."

"He's always been an extremely hard worker and has always been focused on football. So this is the perfect opportunity. When you have that (mindset) you want to play for the best. He couldn't be more excited. We're really looking forward to watching him play for Alabama."

What kind of player was he last year? There were only five receivers with over 90 receptions last year with DG being one of them.

Dieter was one of only five receivers in the nation last season to have 90+ receptions and over 1,000 yards receiving and also at least 10 TDs.

We've talked about the records Derrick Henry had in high school. Dieter was the first HS receiver to post three consecutive 300+ yard receiving games.

He's named after Lou Gehrig ... dad a big Yankees fan.

The family will be in Tuscaloosa next weekend.
