📽 /🎵 Any of you folk watched "The Queens Gambit?"

Never watched the show.

Never heard of the series.

I heard it was pretty good though.
I'm watching it for the second time if that tells you much. Granted, it's playing in the background...adding another 100 sq ft or so to my deck and I'm staining the planks, etc., right now. Building a trellis...some listen to music, I tend to play series like this one.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. I didn't play chess until I was an adult. An old hippie type taught me the basics back in the late 80's, I didn't pick it up until the 90's when I was in school. I found out the guy a few doors down played. We used to get together in the afternoon's to have a few beers.

Crazy thing, I guess. I checked out a few books from Gorgas that documented games and sort of taught myself (while routinely getting my ass kicked by my neighbor.)

As to the series, it's on Netflix.

The game. Never heard of the series.
With the way you think I suspect you'd be pretty good. There are three guys I've never been able to beat. One is pushing 90 and has been playing for a half of a century. The other two? "Refined" their game behind bars...not the drinkin' bars. Coincidentally, I can only manage to win something like two of every ten games playing pool against those guys.

The "hole in the wall" bar you and I met in? We kept a chess set behind the bar...played many a game over a beer. One of the partners would call his moves out 20' away from the board...and I still lost quite a bit.

I'm not a big "board game" player; just not a fan. Although, I think it's likely the best. Can you name another board game you can play through email, or text messages?

I've gotten lost watching these videos with her. It's a lot of "pause, play, pause." Truly fascinating for me.

I post this because I was waxing nostalgic for a minute. You know how every relationship has that 'date night' thing?

There is/was a bar a few miles from the house. They had this "membership" thing (as clubs did in SC back then) and you could join a "mug club." I still have the mug somewhere in this house...had a T on one side, the script A on the other.

I have to give @50+yeartidefan a bit of a break here. Sort of. The name of the bar? Crazy D's. Their "home brew" on tap? Crazy D's. (Miller LIte.) BUT...that $20 I spent on the mug also gave me happy hour all day long. @UAgrad93 a nod to Harry's here...that mug got me $3 pitchers of beer. I digress.

She was a high school teacher. So, we'd meet at the bar at 3:30 or so in the afternoon...smoke a bowl, grab a pitcher, and play chess for an hour or so.

I despise board games. But, this is one I can't quit.
