Steen was a three-year starter on Alabama’s offensive line and a part of three national championship teams. Steen was a solid pass-protector and a road grader for multiple 1,000-yard rushers.

But Steen, who is known as a tough competitor, seems regretful that a required shoulder surgery did not occur until after the conclusion of his final Alabama regular season. Steen suggested he should not have been playing.

ā€œFootball, a lot of it is mentally,ā€ Steen said. ā€œIf you can work through pain, you can go. But at ā€˜Bama, that was the problem. A lot of things you went through and you shouldn’t have. You should have stayed off of it. That’s why a lot of guys from Bama are hurt.ā€

This, from a very good former Alabama player, is a damning accusation.

That said, he doesn't indicate he was pressured to play. He sort of implies it, but strong words nonetheless.

I don't get the sense that Jeff Allen & his staff would do anything that wasn't in the player's best interest. Anthony Steen feels different

Seems like he is implying that players had to play while hurt when they were at Alabama. Maybe he wasn't trying to say it that way, but that is how it kind of comes across.

Short of needing immediate surgery, teams expect players to be honest and upfront with their injuries. We just saw it with Sean White when he was trying to work through a shoulder problem. I hope if players are trying to give thoughtful answers about such stuff years later they consider how the media edits their comments? To me that includes all the unwritten rules they live by about being a competitor, trying to stay at your position and the peer pressure not to let down your teammates. These are just some of the priorities in real time situations I would hope they would specifically qualify about themselves in an honest manner.

Steen is a youngster and will learn to parse their questions and his answers better as time goes on. But anyone that believes what they read in the media is on a fool's errand from the get go.
