🏈 Alabama vs Vanderbilt Film.

Alright, here we go. Alabama's in a true base 3-4 to match what Vandy dandy is running offensively. I'm pretty certain they're in 14 personnel, they went super heavy on this formation.

Lawson here does a great job of taking his read step, scraping downhill to the A gap and taking on the block while keeping his shoulders squared, shot his hands inside violently and initiated the contact.... did everything almost perfectly fitting his gap on this play, except for shedding off the lineman and tackling the ball carrier. Him not being able to shed that block created a lane for Alexander, he saw it and housed it. Jefferson did a good job himself of fitting the backside A gap and shedding off his block and trying to flow over to help tackle the RB, just couldn't get there in time.

This is something that they do much better of executing later on.

Again we're in a 3-4 look to match Vandys 13 personnel. Lawson again did everything perfectly until he took on the block. Read step, filled his gap, did a good job of diagnosing the play down, scraped downhill, then took himself out of the play with how he tried to shed off the block. Instead of staying square and shooting his hands inside the blocker, he used is right shoulder to leverage and then got walled off. I can't state it enough how much I hate this technique. In certain situations, fine.... you'll probably need to do it, but most of the time I'll see linebackers completely take themselves out of a play and give up a massive gain like we just saw here.

We did a fantastic job of fitting this. We're back in our mint front in nickel because Vandy showed us a lighter formation.

Lawson does a great job of reading the play down, you'll see him start to shuffle and scrape over to the plays side, but he doesn't overcommit before reading that Pavia doesn't have the ball. Hill-Green does a great job of scraping downhill, taking on the block, shedding it, and making a play on the ball carrier. Also, watch red Morgan come downhill and set that edge, great job by him. And great job by 11 for beating a chop block and making the tackle. There was literally nowhere for anyone to go on that play had they gotten the ball. Every gap and lane was taken away. Fantastic rep by our defense here.

Look at his rep by Simmons! And notice how we've got 2 other guys on the ball carrier as well. Great job by Collins for beating his man and getting in on the play, and to Hill-Green for scraping downhill and help clean up the play.

Vandy showing us a heavy formation again, so we go back to 3-4. You'll see hill out in space. Hill-Green does a great job here of reading the pulling guard and the opposite side TE pulling over. He scrapes downhill, stacks and sheds off the blocker, kept his shoulders squared, shot his hands inside violently and knocked the TE back. Unfortunately he wasn't able to finish it off with a tackle, but our guys did a good job of running to the ball and making a play.

Fantastic coverage on this play. We take away multiple options, force Pavia to check it down. And look at Lawson and Jefferson coming down and getting the tackle. They both kept their shoulders square to the ball carrier. Perfect!!!!

Also, look at what formation we're in guys. We're in our Mint front, but have 3 ILB's in the game. I've seen LSU do this before, and I like it as a match against what Vandy was doing. We may see it again this week against Missouri.

Man, I'm so excited to see how Dijon Lee progresses. And these types of plays are why. It's man coverage, one on one.... and he wins his battle. And while we're in this, this is something Domani Jackson has struggled with a good bit this season. Hoping to see that get turned around.

And once, we're in mint front and have 3 ILB's in the field. We were in this look a lot throughout the game. And I like it.

This one really pisses off. Lawson read steps, fits his gap, does a great job of reading the play and scraping over the top to go make a play on the RB, and it's all for not because he doesn't wrap up the ball carrier. It's so goddamn infuriating to see how close he is to making all these great plays, and just not finishing it correctly.

I'll get to the second half later today when I get back home.

And just little tidbit before I go, one thing I want to say is this. Whenever Qua Russaw returns, we need to move him to ILB more. Since Pierre has taken over that spot, our pass rushing production has gone up at that position. He's been an absolute monster. And give Hill a little time, and he'll be in the same boat. Russaw has down a good job there, but getting him the play in space more may be beneficial to him and Alabama in the long run. And he's proven he can be productive in other areas as an ILB as well, good run defender, can cover well at the position, sideline to sideline speed, great closing speed on the ball. Just saying, have as a jalon walker type player for this defense.
