As spring ball approaches, Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer is thinking about the larger state of college football and what it means to the Crimson Tide.
In an interview with On3, DeBoer addressed revenue sharing, with schools preparing to start sharing up to $20.5 million per year with its athletes, according to multiple reports. And to DeBoer, that addition will create an āeven playing field,ā bringing the focus of recruiting back to ārelationships and sharing your vision.ā
āPeople that want to be aligned with your vision, and then come to a place like Alabama that has the resources, the tradition,ā DeBoer said. āThe regulation and having a more balanced playing field helps our situation. It allows us to get where it was at one point just a few years back. Where recruiting is real recruiting, not just someone whoās gonna put in the highest bid.ā
If the House vs. NCAA settlement is approved, revenue sharing is expected to start July 1.
In an interview with the Tuscaloosa News in November, Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne called the University of Alabama āas strong of a brand as there is in the country,ā and he is hoping for a model that gives the university the āability to be competitive from a revenue- sharing standpoint and give as many young people as possible the opportunity to go to school and compete as a college athlete.ā
Kalen DeBoer talks NCAA transfer portal window
DeBoer also discussed the NCAA transfer portal window and the proposal for it to be moved to a single 10-day window in early January.
āI donāt feel like you need to have as many available days,ā DeBoer said. āGuys know if theyāre looking to move on and find another opportunity. I donāt think it takes 30 days to try to figure that out. Less days, and everyone can do what they need to do, and we can know our roster and make the adjustments necessary. The players and student- athletes who need to do their part and find a place to go, they got that time, too.ā
DeBoer addressed the transfer portal window in January, saying a āsmaller window, and one window would certainly be ideal.ā
āThatās just more understanding what your rosterās going to be at this time of year is what we all want,ā De-Boer said. āJust taking the gray out of it, the confusion out of it for us, for our players as to whatās ahead, letās get the development process of your team of these guys and the work that we can put in, letās get it all aligned.ā
Alabama will hold its A-Day spring game April 12, and open the 2025 season Aug. 30 at Florida State.
