🏈 Alabama QB Jalen Hurts sounds off on transfer speculation, QB competition

I'm not under the impression that every Bama player has a smooth ride. There are going to be some rough moments in the best of relationships in a 4 year period. I still believe that Jake Coker wanted to tell Lane Kiffin what he could do with his QB evaluations in 2015. Maybe Jake did, I liked to think so. I don't think guys like Mo Smith or even our backup center, Kennedy, leave the program blissfully happy, even with their degree in hand, they just leave anyway. It's just life and so far, our football program has survived it all just fine.

At first I was thinking it was all heading to the point of him blaming the media and others outside of the program for stirring the pot as soon as the second half against Georgia started. Then it seemed to take a U-Turn and go in another opposite direction where he blames the coaches. His dad got him burried so deep in this mess that he needs to head home to Texas and tell his pops to start explaining himself. One would think as good as Hurts has been with the media, community outreach, graduating in 2.5 years that he had the ability and knowledge to go speak with coach on the matter. I have zero doubt Coach Saban has his eyes on Hurts like coaches do for all star playera when they get that preferential treatment. It just sounds too easy to blame the coaches, but not say a word about what your dad did to you and said. I'm still a Hurts fan, but playing the naive and unfair card at this juncture doesn't fit.

I love Jalen and I think he def. has a point and can see where he is coming from but this was not the place nor the time. You cant make comments like this in public and then expect your teammates to stand behind you, let alone your coaches. That sounded like a beaten young man.

Jalen definitely looks unhappy (can't blame him) but I don't think he is being treated in an unfair manner. He has had plenty of starts and ample time to develop better skills in the pocket and reading a defensive secondary. It just so happens that Tua is better in those areas. There is a piece on ESPN.com about this as well.

I expect Jalen to graduate in December and then transfer. As a graduate he would not have to sit out a year.

My opinion: I don’t like this. Looks like he thought this out and planned to make his feelings public first chance he got. Also, curious as to why he didn’t go to the staff and voice these concerns (if he did he didn’t mention it but harped on no one coming to him). All of that said, IF Saban is maneuvering to keep him around so he has an experienced backup that’s not fair.

Again, my opinion.
JMO but at this point I don't believe Nick really gives a shet what Jalen does. Based on his comments that "he didn't know if #2 was even going to be on the roster for fall". Doesn't sound like he is trying his best to keep the guy from packing his suitcase to me.
Is that what he said? I don't think you're quoting this correctly. It makes a difference here.

As I recall there were two sentences. I don't know. I expect him to be. The talking point reported was "I don't know" and that's what is SOP in events as these.

I also believe some of what Jalen has said is misunderstood--painting with a really large brush gives us a label of 'a generational gap.' On that note it's the context here, not so much the content.

I do believe it is of note who speaks to the media. I've maintained that for years in fall camp. I also believe it is of note there are (were?) two quarterbacks speaking at their first availability. There was a definitive win and loss yesterday.

CECIL HURT: Will Hurts’ candid conversation help or hurt him?

Jalen Hurts wanted to talk.

Glaringly obvious as Hurts spoke in the end zone at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday morning, he was frustrated over seven months of silence, an entire spring training where he didn’t get to state his case and a quiet summer that followed. Silently, he’s had to listen while everyone from his head coach to his father to media members who, like it or not, are going to fill the vacuum of silence with opinion and conjecture, gave their own take on the matter. And fans, so many fans, all of whom have a right to their opinion, but none of whom (and this is true of media members, too) have a direct insight into Hurts’ mind.

So, on Saturday, he spoke.

Hurts answered questions, but you could tell that the answers had been formulating long before the questions were asked. This clearly had been weighing on Hurts all summer. His answers were honest and emotional. They barely touched on the “battle” at the quarterback position with Tua Tagovailoa. Hurts has been through all that before. The battle he was describing on Saturday was not to be the No. 1 quarterback but, as he put it, “the Number One source” about himself.

We can all relate to frustration. Not many can relate to the frustration of being the No. 1 topic of conversation in an entire football-crazy state. That frustration was compounded because much of the speculation was that if Hurts didn’t win the competition, he would transfer or, as it has been put often enough, that he would quit. The second thing that was obvious on Saturday, through all his frustration, was that it stung Hurts to hear that he would walk out on his team, on the school from which he intends to graduate.

There was nothing wrong with Hurts facing the media on Saturday and giving direct, heartfelt answers to questions at a press conference. Alabama made him available — he didn’t go on a social media tirade or a secret crusade. He didn’t dodge or sidestep questions. You have to respect that.

The question becomes, was it wise? Will it help him “win the team?” Will it affect his position in the quarterback battle? How much weight does the ultimate decision-maker, Nick Saban, give to the comments from his starting quarterback for the past two years?

Will he treat the next 30 days as a “this will be settled on the field” situation? Or will the “don’t do anything to draw attention to yourself” edict that came after the “Tua Day” celebration in Hawaii — that was never directly mentioned, but the timing of Saban’s statement was pretty clear — now enter into the process?

This time, the “No. 1 source” is Saban. Did he feel like Hurts called him out for not asking his opinion in the spring, or for telling the assemblage at SEC Media Days ”I have no idea” if Hurts would be present for the start of practice? (To be fair, Saban’s very next words were “I expect him to be there,” but that didn’t ring out quite so loudly.) My expectation is that Saban will be less outraged than people think, but not every hurricane makes landfall where you think it will.

There’s a perfectly plausible scenario, and always has been, in which Saban chooses to play Tagovailoa based on his belief that Tagovailoa gives the Alabama team a better chance to win football games. All this off-the-field drama may be irrelevant.

But Jalen Hurts wanted to talk. He spoke what he felt in his heart. Perhaps that will come with a cost, as it often does.

It's not the first time we've had QB's make comments about what CNS said or didn't say. Jalen has been a class act and role model while at the university. I hate he isn't happy and the things he expressed are a sign of the emotional turmoil he's been going through.

If he really feels like he's been mistreated then the talk to the media wasn't the place to air it out. I just have to believe the QB would have access to his head coach, if he wanted it. I don't know if you can be an effective team leader and call out your coaching staff.

The QB position is a focal point and the guys who play QB don't want to be #2.

Just a reminder

Nick Saban's advice to Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa: "Everything you do to bring attention to yourself, or anybody even in your family that brings attention to yourself, you're not doing yourself a service in trying to win the team."
Ed Zackery.............I believe Nick intentionally made his comments about #2 not being on the roster to get a reaction. I guess it is possible for #2 to not play this season and graduate from Bama in Dec then transfer and have 2 years to play at his new gig. We'll see.

Now it's Trump's fault.

In that Mom brought it up, I feel compelled to say I can be critical of the president for all the stupid things he does and says. He is a bonified idiot, maybe certifiable as well, but he can also balance the books like the business shark he is. That is by the way how we tend to put up with everyone else. A lot gets overlooked when you produce. At least until something better comes along.

I assume you were happy with the 8 years of Obama? Right. One guy is a billionaire (because he is a idiot) and the other guy was a community organizer (smart).

Those are my only 2 choices? The real answer is that it doesn't have to be either. The Kardashians are billionaires, I'm not that easily impressed. A great philosopher once said, "stupid is as stupid does."

I personally think Jalen has the ability to be the best QB option this year given his experience level and ability to NOT turn the ball over; however, I don't think his ceiling is as high as Tua's. So the questions becomes do you give the nod to Tua and let him develop through-out the year and live with the mistakes that he'll make or do you give the ball to Jalen for the year and hope Tua doesn't transfer out?

We as fans keep saying Tua is going to be the starter, but he had 1 half of a game where he played "ok" stats wise. It's not like he was 27 of 28 with no turnovers and no mistakes. He was average in completion % and took a ill timed sack and threw a stupid interception. He did make plays when he had to, but over a season does he get away with it?

I have full faith that Saban is completely able to handle the situation and make the best decision regarding the QBs. It may be good forum conversation for us to debate, but in the end the best decisions will be made for the team and each player will have to decide what is best for them moving forward... welcome to life.

As a Coaches son, I’m sure he got his way. So now he’s having to work for it. I thank Jalen for what he’s done for The Team. But seems he’s crying over spilt milk! And butthurt dad didn’t make it better. But at the end of the day Coach Saban is gonna do what’s best!

“But there’s one thing about quitters you have to guard against – they are contagious. If one boy goes, the chances are he’ll take somebody with him, and you don’t want that. So when they would start acting that way, I used to pack them up and get them out, or embarrass them, or do something to turn them around.”...........Coach Bryant

Said once say again.....
Calling out coaching staff...bad ju-ju....
Cant believe he did that....
He will get his 4 games....and no more
Why even stick around at this point? I would bet that Nick would allow him to stay on scholly until Dec (as a non player) and then he can transfer as a grad student to any school of his choice and still have two full years to play at his new gig.
