šŸˆ Alabama officially releases new coaching staff

I'm already tired of this and there is no point in continuing to argue it. Unfortunately Sark is the OC... I'll just sit back and hope he doesn't completely go off the rails.

Who do you want though?!

I WANTED Enos or Gattis... other than that Spavital from West Virginia (maybe not if he wanted to solely bring Air Raid), Hugh Freeze (even with all the drama), Kendal Briles and Princeton's OC Gleeson from Princeton even seemed interesting to me. Freddie Kitchens was my ultimate get until he was named HC at Cleveland. I also thought Matt Canada might be okay. But like I said, all of that is pointless now.

Sounds like Saban wanted Enos too... Tried that. Gattis would've been a first timer like Tosh was this year... Big stage to get your feet wet. Freeze already accepted the head a job at a dang religious school while trying to rehab his image.... Long shot for an OC gig this late in the process.

Not a lot of names jumping off the board right now, honestly. If Sark stays off the hooch I think he's going to do really well... And my gut says he's coming back to college for a reason and it's not to suck. He's seen it all. RTR

Saban wanting Enos is not the narrative that certain people are trying to paint. Gattis would have but to ME, it's no more big a risk than Sark at this point. Freeze would have taken the position IMO, buyout wouldn't have been a problem either.

It's okay to disagree lol I personally do not like the hire but like i said before, Im going to stop bitching about it and just see how things play out.

January 15 Update
New OL coach candidate - Kyle Flood:
He was interviewed by Alabama. Solid chance he ends up as the next OL coach.

Info:

Flood spent the past two years as the Falcons’ assistant offensive line coach. In 2017, he helped offensive line coach Chris Morgan produce a unit that ranked tied for No. 3 in the NFL, surrendering just 24 sacks. However, this season the Falcons have struggled up front, giving up 42 sacks while averaging just 98.3 yards per game on the ground.

Before joining the Falcons, Flood spent 11 seasons at Rutgers, including his final four years as the Scarlet Knights’ head coach. He was named Big East Coach of the Year in 2012 after he helped the Scarlet Knights earn a share of the conference title, marking the first championship in program history. Flood later became the first head coach in Rutgers history to lead the program to three bowl games in his first three years as head coach.

However, things turned sour during a 4-8 campaign in 2015. During that season, Flood was suspended for three-games for improper contact with a university faculty member after he sent an email trying to learn the academic status of a player who was known to be in danger of being ruled academically ineligible. Flood posted a 27-24 record during his four seasons as head coach.

Flood was handed a one-year show-cause penalty in 2017 after the NCAA determined Rutgers ā€œfailed to ensure that the football student-ambassadors’ recruiting activities were permissibleā€ and ā€œfailed to follow its established drug-testing policy with respect to 32 football student-athletesā€ from 2011-12 to 2015-16.

Before becoming the head coach at Rutgers, Flood spent seven seasons coaching offensive line for the Knights. In 2007 he was promoted to run game coordinator. The next year he was elevated to assistant coach. Flood was then named co-offensive coordinator from 2009-10.

Here are where things stand as of Tuesday, January 15.

Coaches at Alabama

Head Coach: Nick Saban
Offensive Coordinator: Steve Sarkisian (has not officially announced by Saban)
Quarterbacks Coach: TBA
Receivers Coach: TBA
Running Backs: Joe Pannunzio
Offensive Line Coach: TBA
Tight Ends Coach/Special Teams: Jeff Banks
Co-Defensive Coordinator/Outside Linebackers: Tosh Lupoi
Co-Defensive Coordinator/Insider Linebackers: Pete Golding
Defensive Line Coach: Craig Kuligowski
Secondary Coach: Karl Scott

Who left and to where

Mike Locksley - Former Offensive Coordinator - Maryland Head Coach
Josh Gattis - Former WR Coach - Michigan OC
Dan Enos - Former QB Coach - Miami OC
Brent Key - Former OL Coach - Associate HC at Georgia Tech

Recent Candidate Updates

Chip Long - Current OC at Notre Dame - For the second year in a row, Long has shown some interest in joining Nick Saban, but for the second year in a row Long has stayed at Notre Dame. I am wondering if a "CO" title did not sit well with Long.

Tee Martin - Former USC OC - Hired by Tennessee on January 15. I have been able to confirm that Martin was in contact with Sarkisian about joining Alabama, but was never offered a job to coach at Alabama from Nick Saban.

Who's left from our candidate hot board

Larry Fedora, former head coach at North Carolina
Derek Dooley, offensive coordinator at Missouri
Major Applewhite, former head coach at Houston
Dan Werner, quarterbacks coach at South Carolina
Bryan McClendon, offensive coordinator at South Carolina
Butch Jones, offensive analyst at Alabama

What we know on Butch Jones

We cannot get a clear idea on what will happen with Alabama offensive analyst Butch Jones. The most we know is it's between Alabama and Maryland. If he was to stay at Alabama, I'd envision him taking over the receivers on offense. At Maryland, I would think he is the offensive coordinator. Jones was seen on a plane Monday headed to Baltimore, Maryland.

A new name to the list: Lance Taylor

Lane Taylor who played at Alabama and started as a walk-on from 1990-2003 is the current receivers coach for the Carolina Panthers. Taylor has been with the Panthers since 2017 and previously served as the running backs coach at Stanford from 2014-16. Taylor has a very good resume and looks as someone who could fit in nicely in-place of Josh Gattis who left to coach at Michigan.

What I believe to be true as of today:
1. Sark is back as OC
2. Lance Taylor will coach WR
3. Flood will coach OL
4. Freddie Roach has a 75% chance of joining the staff after signing day
5. Tosh or Golding will not return. One will go and one will stay. My guess is that Golding stays and Tosh leaves.
6. Coach Kuligowski is 50/50 to return. Saban at times referred to him as lazy. If he leaves Bo Davis is a name to watch but it would seem to me this is where Freddie Roach could fill a spot.
7. Lance Thompson, Kevin Steele and Lorenzo Ward have all spoke with Saban about possible openings on the staff. He’s spoke with dozens more. Some who are insiders felt like Lance Thompson would return. Now they are saying he will not. Things change.
8. Saban wants a veteran DC next year with a proven track record.
9. Some in the football offices have stated that this season has taxed Saban more so than any previous season. The staff turnover and lack of player leadership has been a source of great frustration and probably caused him to consider when he calls it quits more than any year. He wants 1 more championship.
10. The staff does not feel that Ish will be in the class and has turned its efforts to Young and Pickering.
11. Dubose, Shula, Kines and Cottrell are not candidates to join the staff...That nugget is for free.

Saban wanting Enos is not the narrative that certain people are trying to paint
Whom?

All of those claiming that "Saban didn't really want him."
Whefe?

Everywhere. I dont remember if someone linked something on here or about it or I saw someone link another board on twitter but its been all over social media people claiming Saban didn't really want Enos and so he low balled him.

Yet in another thread about "if Saban is hard to work for," everyone seems to be singing the "hell yeah!" tune. Every leader knows that success can only be achieved only as well as they can attract AND retain quality people around them. The fact that Saban has had so much success in the midst of regular turnover is amazing, but it cannot continue.

I keep coming back to something Lane Kiffin said in an interview after he took the FAU job. Kiffin said that while Saban is the best in the biz, he would prefer to be part of a coaching staff that only won one natty but had more fun during the process. Winning and competing for titles on a regular basis but not stopping to savor the moments wasn't a lifestyle that appealed to Kiffin. Enter Dabo who is now winning and competing regularly for titles while having fun...

Everyone has a different definition of "fun during the process" and that definition will absolutely change with age.

I know my perspective over the last 10 years has changed with regards to working long hours. But that is as much about environment and age of my kids as well.

Kiffin's idea of "fun" and mine are probably very different.

FTFY

As competitive as Dabo is, life is a grind at Clemson as it is anywhere else among winning programs. (see Urban Meyers). Now, with the added expectation of winning big, it won't slow down for him.

One factoid I've noticed in sports is that there is a lot more "fun" in winning. The gym rats on the teams I was on were usually the guys that were pretty good at what they do and they seemed to enjoy all the other stuff that much more. I can see why coach Saban would be the ultimate gym rat.
