Are we sure this guy is who he says he is?

The thing that kind of bothers me is that it doesn't really seem like much thought was put into it. Almost like he knew who he wanted from the get, which honestly could be a good thing if he was that sure on it. IDK, I'm gonna take a wait and see attitude about it.
I know, you know that every AD worth his salt has a list. I know Byrne had one. What I think you're missing here is Byrne's attention to that list was turned up a notch when Avery met with the Pelicans. While it was an informal meeting—a friend of the family type of thing—if fans took notice I'm sure he did as well.

I'm assuming here when I ask...

Is it the relatively short period that "bothers" you? I don't mean this as an I told you so, but it was mentioned several days ago that we shouldn't expect it to take long. For Bama, you have to look no further than his hiring of Bo. Both of these two hires have been done and announced within a week, eight days I think is the exact number. Some would call that expedient while others may suggest rushed. I'm of the opinion he's just done a good job identifying, pursuing, and landing the guy he wanted.

Even if we leave Bo out of this conversation the same can still be said. Did you follow any of the story when Polk retired/resigned at Mississippi State and how that search was conducted? I would say that situation was one of the worst an AD could be involved with.

Don't condemn what you can't see. I'm sure Byrne has maintained a list of "coaches to watch" even when CAJ was first hired. What Oats has been able to do with resources that don't/won't/can't compare to Alabama's has been outstanding. There was no way that Alabama was going to get a Coach K-level coach. Petino (who would be the closest to a championship-level coach available) has too much baggage. Oats isn't who I would have gone after, but it's a good catch for the condition Alabama basketball is in.

I like the hire and like the fact that AD Byrne knew who he wanted and didn’t waste time. To touch on what @TerryP mentioned about Avery and the Pelicans. This may have sped up the process no matter how informal that meeting may have been. This could also explain some of the collapse the team suffered. Just an assumption, but kids do talk and that could’ve caused for a disgruntled locker room with players checking out on him even with him still here. Some or all may have felt they were lied to as well. We say it all the time, ā€œdon’t commit to a coach, commit to the school!ā€ It’s easier said than done when it is the coach coming into your home, your gym/stadium/etc and not academic advisors or even the president of the school. Maybe Kira, Petty, Giddens, and or Ingram have a change of heart and buy into CNO and what he brings.

After trying to become a basketball fan this season and watching the inconsistencies, whether effort, execution or even BBall IQ by CAJ squad, I’m willing to give Byrne and Coach Oates the benefit of the doubt. Grand scheme, now idea if this guy is the answer or a good hire....I guess I’m just a bit
