šŸ€ Alabama hires Nate Oats as new basketball coach

Exactly why he is HC at Bama. Reminds me of 2005. ut waited until the end of the 2004-2005 season to hire Bruce Pearl. If I had been AD at Bama, I would have hired him at halftime of Bama's loss to UW-Milwaukee.
He was already carrying the moniker of "snitch" around NCAA circles back then. I thought "there's not a better fit" than UT when they hired him. With Pearl secretly recording Deon Thomas trying to implicate Illinois and Tennessee's involvement with Fulmer being a secret witness I saw it no other way than "two peas POS's in a pod."

I wasn't condemning anything.
In the other thread leading up to this one I mentioned two things I believe are of note. One, there's pro's and con's with each coach and two, some would be happy and others would complain. Neither of those two thoughts are earth shattering: by any means.

I'd like to revisit that for a second here.

Personally, I can see two reasons for fans to complain. And, at this point, they are the only two reasons I consider legitimate.

There are fans who wanted the "splash hire" when it comes to a name: the kind of that immediately makes the basketball world (fans, specifically) turn their heads. Names like Pitino and Donovan fit that bill. Oats doesn't carry that weight among a lot of casual basketball fans.

Secondly, I've seen many point to his relatively short time coaching collegiate ball. That's a valid point as well.

In my view that's countered by a few things. One is how I've heard him described by other basketball coaches and those I consider having a basketball minds. "He runs good stuff." In my opinion, coming from peers, it's a compliment of the highest order.

On a more personal note after spending time getting to know more about him I have a lot of respect for him and his family. His wife is a cancer survivor. From personal experience with family I know what kind of mental fortitude that takes. To me, that speaks volumes about the man and his wife.

Should save some of you a little surfing time.

I was really impressed with his new waterfront home. I love the craftsmanship that has gone into the older homes. They must have taken those pictures in August. The rest of the time snow is blowing off Lake Erie sideways as the local patrons pile up in Townsquare to sing in unison, "The Wreck of the Edmund FitzGerald."

Bruce actually got Mike Slive fired during that Illinois deal

@JoseyWalesTheOutlaw, how many people caught up in that whole ordeal? Do you remember?

Now that I think about it ...

As I recall that's when Vitale was making his mark on ESPN's basketball coverage. He was pretty vocal.

The story...………...

Pearl, who'd broken a kind of coaching omerta; not Collins, who was labeled a cheat at a time when Illinois's rivals around the Midwest were trying to lay recruiting inroads in Chicago; not Thomas, who looked like another kid with his hand out; not Thomas's supposed best friend, who acted as Pearl's snoop; not Mike Slive, who was then a lawyer hired (and subsequently fired) by Illinois and who is now SEC commissioner; not Randy Rueckert, a former NCAA investigator, who once allegedly hounded Deon Thomas up and down the sidelines of a pickup game; not Rich Hilliard, the former head of the NCAA's enforcement staff, who was a college friend of Pearl's and who would have some trouble of his own staying on the right side of the rules. Even two decades on, it still has something to teach us—about Pearl, yes, but especially about the nature of that burn-proof vault of yellowing secrets known as the NCAA.
