I really hope Oates turns Bama into a player in the game of basketball. Hopefully Byrne and others in the administration make a firm commitment to the basketball team. I wish him well! Hopefully, Lewis will reconsider his transfer from Bama.

From the articles I have read here today, Oates seems to have that personal relationship with his players and works them really hard to play a winning brand of bball, at breakneck speed with mental and physical toughness. He seems to have the right qualities.

Exactly why he is HC at Bama. Reminds me of 2005. ut waited until the end of the 2004-2005 season to hire Bruce Pearl. If I had been AD at Bama, I would have hired him at halftime of Bama's loss to UW-Milwaukee.

Don't condemn what you can't see. I'm sure Byrne has maintained a list of "coaches to watch" even when CAJ was first hired. What Oats has been able to do with resources that don't/won't/can't compare to Alabama's has been outstanding. There was no way that Alabama was going to get a Coach K-level coach. Petino (who would be the closest to a championship-level coach available) has too much baggage. Oats isn't who I would have gone after, but it's a good catch for the condition Alabama basketball is in.

~2 weeks ago Buffalo thought they locked him down with an extension.

I like how the contract has lots of incentives, hope Byrne does the same.

While it was fast, I don't think it was a snap judgement. I'm sure Byrne considered Oats' success, player development, and reputation in addition to the finances of CAJ's buyout and paying a new coach including incentives.
