Alabama interviews Lance Taylor | BamaInsider.com
Steve Sarkisian might not be the only familiar name returning to Alabama in the midst of its second coaching shakeup in as many years. Former Crimson Tide receiver Lance Taylor interviewed with Alabama on Tuesday and is thought to be a strong candidate to land the wide receivers coach position, BamaInsider has learned.
Taylor, who spent the past two seasons as the wide receivers coach for the Carolina Panthers, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Alabama from 2007-08. He played for the Crimson Tide from 1999-2003.
This past season, the Panthers saw a club-record 15 players record a reception while 10 different players hauled in a receiving touchdown. While running back Christian McCaffrey led the team with 107 receptions for 867 yards and six touchdowns through the air, Taylor played a big role developing Carolinaās receivers. D.J. Moore was among the top rookies in the league with 55 receptions for 788 yards and two touchdowns. Taylor was also instrumental in the development of Devin Funchess, who has tallied 107 receptions for 1,389 yards and 12 touchdowns during their two years together.
If hired, Taylor would replace Josh Gattis, who left the Crimson Tide after one season to become the offensive coordinator at Michigan earlier this month. Taylor would also inherit one of the nationās top receiving corps. The Crimson Tide returns its top four wide receivers from last season, including Biletnikoff Award winner Jerry Jeudy.
Before joining Carolina in 2017, Taylor spent three seasons as the running backs coach at Stanford where he played a key role in developing McCaffrey. Under Taylorās guidance at Stanford, McCaffrey was a Heisman finalist in 2015 after setting a school record with 2,019 rushing yards to go with eight rushing touchdowns. He also led the Cardinal with 45 receptions, 645 receiving yards while pulling in five touchdowns through the air.
Taylor has also coached wide receivers at Appalachian State in 2009 before spending the next three seasons with the New York Jets, serving as a coaching intern (2010) offensive quality control coach (2011) and assistant tight ends/quality control coach (2012). He spent the 2013 season as the Panthersā assistant receivers coach.
