I wonder why they can’t implement some type of arresting cable ( like on a aircraft carrier) to where if the vaulter didn’t control his pole and it passes a certain spot the bungee pulls it back .

I pole vaulted in high school and one of the first things you learn is to nudge the pole back - for several reasons: 1) depending on the length of the pole and the height you're attempting, you could clearly get over the bar only to have the pole dislodge the bar. Counts as a miss. 2) Read the article above. I've seen many poles snap at the maximum bend point sending the vaulter into the box (where the pole is planted) on his back, or onto the pole where it broke but usually on the vaulters back, side, arm or chest. There are no arresting cables because that's part of the vault. In the higher vaults, it's okay for the pole to go under the bar. You just don't want it to hit the uprights and know the bar off.
