🧑‍🍳 13 Alabama restaurants our (Al.com) readers never get tired of...

The Mata's sandwich was good, in retrospect probably would've gone with the meatball grinder. It was post-lunch, around 1:30 or so, and folks were still hauling their greek pizzas out to go. I'll give them a try next time.
I just haven't been intentional about Davenport's, that's an easy one for me, although if I'm in that general area I'll go to Mudtown in Cahaba Heights. I'll plan to knock out two or three of the coastal places at some point this year. I'll get to Gibson's in time.

RTR,

Tim
Gibson's doesn't seem as good as it used to be, IMO.
If you make it to The Tin Top, may I suggest the Coco Loco Shrimp for an appetizer if you like coconut. It does have a little zing to it, but that coconut rum sauce will make you slap somebody. :p

Bob Gibson's has went down hill IMO. Last two times I took my mom there for her birthday, we were underwhelmed. Best BBQ in the Huntsville region to me is RDs Smokehouse in Harvest.

I'm always there all the time. Firestarter sauce... shyyyytttt fire!

That place is so damn good. My wife wants to eat there nearly every month. Their ribs are so tender.
Our daughter was having PT at Nisan (sp?) in Madison on County Line Road this past week and because of your recommendations, we looked this place up. It was the worst BBQ we've ever eaten without a doubt. I ordered, as I always do at a new place, a pork plate and the meat was not fresh and easy to tell it had been rewarmed over several days. When we left, I asked the lady when the meat was cooked. She said we do all our cooking Sunday and Monday.

58 cents for a glass of water!

The girls brought their's home and our dog wouldn't even eat the left over chicken, no lie! He gnawed the bone but left the meat. That's pretty bad. Patsy said after we left, "were those guys serious about this being good BBQ? If they were, you need to invite them to try Whitts (a local BBQ place near our home.) "

Brethren, if you're ever in Lawrence County, you have an invitation to try some really good BBQ.

LOL, that sucks. After the earlier comments I saved them on my phone in Google Maps (thay had good reviews on there too), but I just undid that. That looks like some crockpot BBQ or the stuff sitting under the heat lamp at the Food World hot bar.

Damn I'm sorry to hear that. I had their bbq ribs and chicken and it has always been great. It has been a minute since I've been there but it was always great.

That pic does look like crockpot BBQ. Gross. Their ribs have always been fantastic though and fall right off the bone. Never had that shit you posted.

My wife loooves BBQ so we'll travel to Whitts and try it. Sorry your experience at RDs wasn't good.

I'm suprised the girl at the desk said they smoke Sunday and Monday because I've seen the owner up at the resturnant early in the morning, many times Iv'e passed by the place on way to work. Earliest I've seen was 5am 6am, etc throughout the week.

I've used them many times for catering to the family and friends and it has been a huge hit. I'm not big fan of pulled chicken though. Every thing else has been good. So, I'm little suprised by the review, but everyone has different expectations and that's fine. I hate that you had a bad experience.

Yeah that was shocking. They always seemed to be smoking their meat that day. I've certainly never heard someone say it was the  worst BBQ ever.

No problem brethren. It’s all good. But when we arrived at 11:30 a.m. there was no one else there. No other vehicle in the parking lot. Patsy said , “they must be closed. “

You’ll never pull up to Big Bob Gibson’s or Jim & Nicks, or Whitts or Dreamland or Archibalds at 11:30 a.m. and the parking lot be empty.

you're the one wanting the penny gone. they done did away with the nickel, dime and quarter.
They'd still add tax to the 17 and leave me with some odd number. I have no idea what they charge for a bad check now-a-day. I still tend to think if everyone dealt with whole numbers there wouldn't be as much. But what do I know?

(Easy to figure out why they don't put liquor prices with tax on menus...bet that 16 percent tax would create some anxiety. At least I think it's 16 now: State, state by the drink, hospitality, and then the city...think I have them all.)

Today I learned ...

Yep, they've been on Morris Avenue the whole time. Between them and the original Gus's and Sneaky Pete's, much goodness was spawned down there. They would open their doors when roasting, the smell would waft down the street, and we'd look like we were following the Pied Piper around the corner from the banks. On a more recent note, the original Purple Onion was right there, too, but I don't think it's there anymore.

That was open when I was in school / Tuscaloosa. I've got a vague image in my head but I'm not sure that's the right place. I know I ate their food a few times: the parents (Dad) of a girl I was with at the time was a take out fan of the place.

This will haunt me.

Don't know why, but I was thinking the name of that peanut place on Morris was The Peanut Depot. I agree with you , the smell of those roasting peanuts in what look like antique machines was like no other. My old boss man turned me on to the place in the early 80's. Been there a good many times.

My boss also turned me on to Pete's Famous Hotdogs (I think?). They're not on Morris, 1'st Av N maybe? Very small place, only a few stools at a bar. Dang good dogs. Not affiliated with Sneaky Pete's
