🏈 Zach Mettenberger sucker punched after responding to "Roll Tide"

Former LSU quarterback and 2014 sixth-round pick Zach Mettenberger was punched in the face over the weekend at Losers Most Wanted Bar & Grill in Nashville according to Steve Ford, the popular nightspot’s owner.

First reported by Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, Mettenberger responded with ‘good luck with that’ after a bar patron shouted ‘Roll Tide’ in the Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback’s direction. Ford says Mettenberger did nothing to provoke the obvious Alabama supporter, but received a ‘sucker punch’ by the patron’s friend in return.

“Here’s the truth: The guy said something about ‘Roll Tide!’ to Zach, and Zach turned around and said ‘Good luck with that,’ ” Ford told the Tennessean Monday. “And the guy’s buddy then sucker-punched Zach.

“I promise you that Mettenberger did not throw a punch. He didn’t do anything. The guy sucker-punched him in the eye, that’s the bottom line, and the guy that punched him started running out the door. My door guys had to chase him down.”

The alleged assailant was detained by the “door guys” according to Ford, but no charges were filed.

“It is what it is and it’s over. No one is pressing charges,” Ford said. “It shouldn’t have happened to begin with. The guy said ‘Roll Tide.’ He tried to provoke him. But Zach did not throw one punch, period. I was standing right next to him.

“I know in 15 years being in the bar business, I know that everyone is trying to provoke someone who is a moving billboard. I don’t care if they are country music, a rapper, football players or whatever. Everybody is trying to push somebody’s buttons. It is a lawsuit jungle out there.”

Mettenberger’s coming off a banner final season in Baton Rouge where he threw for a career-high 3,082 yards and 22 touchdowns. He is currently listed as Tennessee’s fourth-string quarterback behind Jake Locker, Charlie Whitehurst and former Arkansas passer Tyler Wilson heading into fall camp according to pro football scouting service ourlads.com.

I like how Miss Clay adds her hyperbole to the story. There's nothing in the source story to confirm they were even Bama fans. If I wanted to make a Bama fan angry, I'd probably throw last year's Iron Bowl in their face - it's happened to me a number of times from folks who aren't aubrun fans.

Lots of idiots out there who try to provoke athletes in bars. Charles Barkley was involved in some almost legendary incidents. Theses guys should probably do their partying in private.

I'm hearing it from all the LSU fans I know. "Mett took the high road and didn't return the punch." or "Mett proved he was the better man 'cause he didn't retaliate."

I personally think it was a cheap shot (although I can't be sure). However, I wondering if Mett took the high road or did he realize that discretion is the bettor part of valor? After all, there were two of them.

I realize that, traditionally, Tennessee and Auburn are our arch-rivals, but living in Louisiana has added LSU to the list, at least for me.
