šŸˆ Yabo Dabo Sweeney's tenure at Alabama?

I could probably do some research here, but figured I'd reach out to some of y'all first. I for one cannot stand Dabo Sweeney. I hate the guy's ego, his arrogance, and his outpouring support (he's their coach so I get it) for a Clemson team I have hated my entire life. The guy acts like Clemson is the National Champion every year and does the impossible each and every weekend. My question is, what drove him out of Tuscaloosa? I have had a friend of mine whom is a South Carolina fan tell me to ask or look up his tenure and why he is no longer here, so I wanted to ask and see if any of y'all understood the story. Thanks in advance.

I want to say he was fired with all of Dubose's coaches and then went into real estate for a few years before going over to Clemson. That whole staff was let go so it wasn't personal against him I do not believe.

AIG Baker out of B-ham.

He's been offered the opportunity to return to Bama by Saban (before he got the HC job at Clemson.)

I like Dabo, but he's an excitable coach who has risen to the head coaching ranks faster than his head coach PR acumen. If he's your coach, you love it; if you're indifferent to Clempson, you're annoyed or amused; if he's coaching your rival, I would think he would be maddening.

I think it's funny how he grabs at all the straws he can. An example: after the win over Spurrier's bunch he said twice in rapid succession during the post game interview: We're the first ACC team to beat two SEC teams back to back (going back to the bowl game last year). I think it pretty much falls the way It Takes Eleven said.

Dabo was a pretty neat guy when he was in school. When he was coaching here with Stallings as a GA and then under DuBose I didn't see any difference him as a person.

Based on where he is as a coach right now he's not a fit for Bama. I still have to take into account what Coach Stallings said back in the mid-90's about Dabo...he's going to be a hell of a coach one day.

He's always been a heck of a recruiter.

K, first of all, I am in NO way, shape, or form advocating or even thinking stupid rumors like the Texas thing are even remotely true. Hell, no! I hope that CNS stays here for another five - ten years before he's ready to relocate to Lake Burton.

That said, let's just say that the UGA trust one day finally have had enough of nice guy Richt not winning it all and they bring Kirby Smart back home. Dabo still has family here. His parents own the hardware store across the street from my school, the school where a family member attends (I do know her). Given his current rate of success at Clemson (and how much he still dislikes *U), do you guys think that Dabo might be a solid candidate to replace CNS?

(this is all just speculation, just typing out loud - no more!)

Family is the key word here—in this case immediate family. His wife would have a HUGE say in that decision...should it arise. The health scare they had several years back led to some very close and personal relationships with her and people in that community. It was those relationships that played a large role in him not joining Saban's staff when he was still in the assistant role at Clemson.

While I don't think Dabo would screw up an interview nearly as badly as Croom did, I do believe that possibility would be dependent on his plans for a staff—specifically on the defensive side of the ball.

I'm not suggesting this combination but using CJK as an example. I'd say it's likely a combination similar to a Swinney/Kines duo would have a lot of success.

(I'm still inclined to believe Price/Kines would have had some success. Nationally and on a long term basis? There's the question.)

I like Dabo. Hope he does well. While I do not know him personally his story is pretty awesome. (Family history).

I have the good fortune of dealing with a few medical sales reps that were teammates of his on the 92 team. They both on separate occasions raved about Dabo and the type of person he was on and off the field. They both are able to keep in touch with him (minimally) but said he is as good a guy as he ever was.

Who someone is and how they come across on TV and in interviews are two completely different things. We look no further than Saban as a great example.

Personally, I like Dabo a lot. His enthusiasm is an extension of who he is. If you get a chance, look into his story. The guy is a GREAT example of how a person, with desire to do so, can make it against all odds. At one point in his early life he was homeless. While he was a walk-on player here at Bama, his mother had to live in the dorm with him and his roommate. I know this much, that he doesn't take excuses from his players or coaches for not being able to do something. He has a zeal for success and, if you look at the before and after of Clemson, you'll see the fruition of it. He is a very generous person without stepping into the spot light for what he does. He is still a young coach who is building a trail of success, and I like the guy.
If he eventually becomes a candidate for the HC at Bama, I think he'll be successful - based on how successful he has already been on and off the field.

By the way, that is not to say that I want him to be a candidate any time soon. I hope CNS is here for another 10 to 15 years. :a:

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

Dabo and I walked on together and he was classy from the word go. He is fiery and passionate for his team and players. I have told my son that if he couldn't go to BAMA (he will anyways), I would love for him to go play for Dabo.

Those who know Dabo well knows this is a transition year for him as a head coach... When he was picked to take over after they hired Bowden, it was to many just a stop gap measure because he was just so loved by all the players, they could get him cheap and he had so many good recruits on the line they might have (and would have) lost if he had not been kept... Most thought he'd do until they found "a real coach"... Not many of the big wigs there expected him to do as well as he has...

That said, he's been more of a rah rah coach and still working to be "one of the boys" and the players friend over the last few years and now he's trying to transition into just being the boss. He was so young when he got the job it was easier to be the other way, the rah rah coach with the boys,,, now that he's maturing he knows that it's going to take more than emotion to win them all and he's becoming a bit tougher on the boys and being more assertive over the assistant coaches.

This change was necessary for both Clemson and Dabo to move to the next rung up the ladder. Personally, I wouldn't have wanted to be in charge of our program as a rah rah coach, but like others, I am watching him closely as he tries to mature into a more disciplined coaching style.

I had the opportunity to talk to Dabo and he's told me that not only because Clemson gave him the opportunity to be a head coach, but because of his love for the area and the contacts he's built there, he could think of very few opportunities that could pry him away from there and that it is his dream to make that school into a contending program year in and year out like an Alabama and make his job one of the most sought out jobs in football.

The powers that be at Clemson were wary of the Dabo hire in the beginning, now they would open their checkbooks to keep him and he's someone they now have faith in to run the program far into the future.

Would we be one of the "few opportunities"? He just smiled and said I think they have a coach that'll be around for a long time and changed the subject and started talking to someone else... (G) So I think he at least has coach speak down... (G)
