One attribute that smaller LB's have is change of direction especially in pass coverage last year it hurt us in the matcup.

I prefer a 4-3 keep it simple with of course some variations and let the players play.
With smaller Lb's I am talking 220 plus here can run support and have pass coverage.

The Jack LB in a 3-4 gets caught up in mismathes.

be careful mongo. you run the risk of being attacked by the Sabanite police. they will tell you that you're making it too complicated for them, you shouldn't question the Almighty Saban, and therefore your contrarian views should be silenced. :D

it is so sad how some fans get so threatened by critical discussion that questions their coach/team.

musso,

Question: Who in sam hell has ever silenced you? Please get out of political forum mode. Everyone on this forum (except for opposing fans that visit) all pull for the same team.

calm down. i was mainly joking, hence the smiley. bama1289 and bamabuzzard have both told me to "drop it" and "let it go."

I have no problem with "critical discussion" but what I do have a problem with is discussing a subjective topic and being told OVER AND OVER that my opinion is "wrong" as if the topic we're discussing has an absolute truth to it.

2+2=3 is "wrong". Thinking that going "lighter and smaller" to stop the spread is a mistake is an opinion.

80% joking and 20% serious? No one here is threatened by your "critical discussion", I can assure you.

I NEVER SAID YOUR OPINION IS WRONG. i said that you were making the same mistake as BamaCore, that is, you misunderstood what i was proposing. your reply (and BamaCore's) indicated that you thought i was advocating for a smaller defense than the rest of the conference. that is a gross misunderstanding of this whole thread. rather it is Saban who, based on his rhetoric, the needs of his preferred scheme, and his recruiting thus far, is wanting bigger players.

The only "bigger" players that we are recruiting is really on the d-line. We recruited and signed one linebacker over 230 pounds last year. Don'ta Hightower. Other than that we aren't recruiting "heavy guys". This year we are only after one linebacker that will likely report his freshman year over 230 pounds and this is Nico Johnson.

Again, aside from the d-line, I don't really see the "heavy" players you are referring to.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you're advocating using the method of smaller and faster players to defend the spread correct? Not necessarily reshaping the entire defense in that manner but having players on the team that can be put on the field to defend it, correct? If that is correct then I wasn't "wrong". At first I thought you were saying this but realized about half way through the thread what you were saying. So I understood the point you were making. However, though I think that is one way to defend it I don't agree with doing it that way. I believe you can still have "big" players (i.e. 230lb LB's) with speed and couple that with using discipline and sound fundamentals can stop the spread.

But either way I'm out of this thread. You make good points I just don't agree with the strategy.
