i've never been to a BAMA - ut game in person.
well....that's not entirely true. when i was in high school, i was in the band and we had a concession stand at legion field. we got to work all the BAMA games played there. so in '87 and '89 we worked the BAMA-ut game since BAMA played their biggest home games at legion field. but i hardly every got to see the entire game. we usually were required to work at least one full half, but mostly about 3 quarters. so i would usually work the first half, halftime, and the third quarter. after we were done with our work time, we'd get to go out and watch the rest of the game (or the first part if we chose to work the later part). so i did get to see a couple quarters live.
but i've never watched an entire BAMA-ut game live.
with that said, the '09 game has to be at the top, or damn close to it, for me. i was on The Quad tailgating during that game. i can still remember everything leading up to that final kick. i can remember where i was standing (couldn't sit..too damn nervous), what i was doing, how i was feeling, and what i was thinking just before that final play.
i can remember the ball being kicked, Cody putting up his big-ass hand, and the ball hitting him damn-near in the chest 'cause it was kicked so low.
one other thing i remember, was telling everyone around me, that if we block the kick we'll know it before it actually happens on tv as we'd be able to hear the stadium before we see it on tv since the tv is a bit behind actual live events. and boy was i right.
we were all standing/sitting there, most with fingers in mouth, biting on nails, just hoping for one more miracle. lincoln gets set to kick, and just as the ball is snapped on tv, i hear the loudest roar come from the stadium that i've ever heard being that far away. i mean, that sound gave me chills, and i'm getting them again right now just thinking and writing about it. i knew, at that moment, that we'd done it again and we'd won. when it happened on tv, about 1.5 seconds later, The Quad erupted into the most deafening sound i'd ever heard. it was like a mirror of sound from the stadium. everybody was just running around screaming, high-fiving, hugging, shaking hands, etc.
after a few seconds of that, i just sat back down in my chair and let the energy drain out of me. i was almost shaking from the anticipation of that play and all that adrenaline building up waiting on that kick. it was the most visceral and surreal feeling i've ever had. hell, i almost cried.
that game, i think, is what really got that team thinking they could accomplish what they ultimately accomplished that season. that was their one hump, they got over it together and never looked back.
it's funny, sort of. seeing Lane Kiffin on the sideline that day and all of us thinking about how much we hated him and laughing at him for what he'd said at the beginning of the season. then laughing at him again when he was fired from usc. now, he's our OC and we love him (for the most part).
of course, some of us may have felt that way about Coach Saban when he was at lsu.....
