This is totally useless, but I want your input. Without giving a ton of useless details.....

I just recently sold a vehicle and have been saving money for a new toy. I love old cars (specifically chevy) and I am an avid deer/turkey hunter. I have been looking now for about a year at buying a Yamaha Rhino UTV. The Rhino would be a useful tool at the hunting camp and are a lot of fun to putt around the property on during work days. They make for a good ride and are excellent for hauling deer out of the woods. I have a 4 wheeler and it has been good to me, but I'm just an old man at heart and want to make things easier. I have found several on the internet and find them all the time in my price range.

Having said that, I have lived on craigslist here lately and have also found a 65 Chevelle. It has a 406 small block that will jar the ground. It is by no means perfect but would be a great project to play with.

I can only get one, and I'm having a difficult time choosing. It is sort of like that Jessica Biel / Jessica Alba thing. What Would a Bama Fan Do?

you gotta ask yourself, do you want to spend weekends hunting or weekends under the car?

Partially renovate the kitchen or bathroom or bedroom for your wife.

She will be happy. And your life will be less stressful.

And make sure to go through a long and open process of comparing the UTV and old car, showing the angst you have between choosing between the two, and THEN ask her if she would rather use the money to fix up the house. She might even thank you but tell you to use it on one of your toys, so you will get the brownie points AND the toys. Of course, that puts you back at the same question.

I'm an old car nut, so my heart says the car, but you'll need to decide if the time and money you will need to spend with the car will take you too much away from family and hunting. If the Chevelle is cheap enough to be in the ball park with a Rhino/Mule, I'd take a close look before pulling the trigger. Will this be a weekend driver or do you intend to track it? If the 406 is producing what others have done with the small block (and it's a recent addition to the car), you may want to make sure the tranny and rear end are capable of handling the hp. If it's a good engine, take a good look at the frame and sheet metal (including floor pans, wheel wells, trunk area and the areas around the windshield and rear window) to see if there are things that might be difficult to fix if you do a restoration.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

RTR,

Tim

Thanks for the input Tim.

The engine is a recent rebuild. 12 bolt posi-trac with a turbo 350 Tranny. All the drive train seems to be intact. The rear quarter panels are in need of body work repair. Floor pans are ok, but as you know, all old chevy's have rusted to some extent under the rear/back glass.

Money is the same, so that is not the issue.

I think I have decided on the Rhino for now. The wife and I are both in grad school getting our Nurse Practitioner license right now. We graduate in 2 years and I have the go ahead to get a new Challenger when we graduate. I can buy a completely restored 67-69 Camaro for half of what the new Challenger goes for, so I'm really leaning that way. I just found this deal on this Chevelle and was wanting it really badly. It is not too far from you. It is in Rome. Found it on Craigslist.

Doug, go for the Rhino. The Car is a very nice project, with it comes more money than the car itself. Restoring a old car takes time, money, tools, and a ongoing process, because you will never be satisfied. With the Rhino, you get tons of relaxing days at the camp, more deer hunting because you just can't let it sit up, and last but not least, when I come down and hunt with you, you can haul my sorry arse around in it.
