🏈 What kind of upgrade does Rumph bring to the d-line?

There's a couple of things I like about him.

We've been hitting the Carolina's fairly hard recruiting the last few years and have missed out on some great prospects; Stephon Gilmore comes to mind immediately. (Although I wonder where he'd fit in our defensive backfield today.)

Rumph has been coaching in the Carolina's for several years now and was considered to be one of the ACC's best recruiters. (Curt Cignetti was as well when it comes to recruiting this area of the country) He fits with Saban's hiring practices in that he's known for his recruiting prowess like all those on our staff are as well.

He was a linebacker in his playing days at South Carolina, coached defensive backs at SC State and linebackers at Memphis so his overall knowledge of defensive schemes is one of the best.

I see him more of a guy that has an expertise in players getting off the line and around the end whereas I saw Bo Davis as more of an interior guy.

Rumph has coached some good ones, for sure. Ricky Sapp and DeQuan Bowers are two that come to mind immediately. The transition has been easy undoubtedly helped by working with Kevin Steele for a bit.

Citing Terry's assessment of Rulph as a better outside-rush coach than an inside-rush coach, I have to think that with the horses that we have outside, this could be 1992-esque -- bookends. With arguably the nation's best Defensive Backfield and the Linebacker corp, and Copeland/Curry Version 2, it looks like another boring year of watching 2 yards and a cloud of dust. ;)

You're conceding two yards? Oh LBS, have you lost faith in our defense?!?! Two yards!!! Oh, the humanity!

The one group I can't put put this group of defensive lineman in is that '92 group. Right now, I'd put our defense about like this...

'92 DL > '11 DL
'92 LB ≤ '11 LB
'92 DB < '11 DB's.

This very well may change in the first month of the season. This DL isn't lacking potential or talent. I've very curious to see how the rotation works along the line. It's an unknown, at least to me, because we've yet to see how Dial or Stinson—as two examples—are going to fare. In my opinion, if we have two guys who can contribute on 20% of the snaps that "greater than" for '02 could easily be an equal to in the least.

Bottom line. It's the best defense Saban has been able to field yet.
