What did you expect tonight?

Alabama has been increasingly unimpressive game by game, as the year has gone on. Was the trend going to stop today?

What did you expect would happen when your defense can't pressure the QB?

What did you expect to happen when your defense simply can't tackle?

What did you expect from an offense that can't put two succesful plays together most of the time without imploding? Obviously imploding means against "good" teams. Yeah, we're World-beaters against Duke, but I guess that doesn't really count for much.

Notes and Observations

I'll start with a question.

How does Bobby Williams still have a job on this staff as special teams coordinator? Or is this one of those,...well, Kirby is the DC, but Saban runs the defense...things? Should I be mad at Bobby, or be mad at someone else?

Why is it that our special teams continue to be pathetic? Not all aspects of them, but many. By in large, our special teams are a liability to us, mainly because of things like we witnessed tonight.

Let me put it to you this way. This should be telling.

My older son has never played tackle football. He's played several years of flag, but watches all the Bama games, and is a college football nut. He watches all the ESPN stuff and other games on t.v. He's only 12, but loves the game and studies it.

Just before the LSU fake punt, my son says to me that LSU is going to fake it. "When LSU (I can't remember the exact term he used) "rugbys' it, or sprint kicks it" they tend to fake it, and go to the left".

BAMA was lined up for a block, or atleast in a non-safe alignment.

LSU faked it and went for a first down.

Why can a 12-year old see this and not our coaches? Why would our coaches not line up in safe when playing against the one coach in college football who would have faked the punt? I mean, LES MILES!!!!! If anyone is going to try it, it's him. Why play into it? Are we really that stupid? Are our coaches that brain-dead?

Seriously....???

Why?

Anyone?

Our special teams continue to let us down because of stupidity.

How bout that 2-point conversion? I love how right before the ball is snapped, Gary Danielson says that LSU sprints right when they want 2. Apparently everyone in America knows this but our staff.

What about that offense line huh! Hell yeah! Fewer and fewer rushing yards per game, and more and more sacks. Yeah, we hold our own against San Jose State, and I guess that's what matters.

Quick screen left has to go!!!! Someone needs to tell McElwaine now to get rid of that sh*t right now. That play has disaster written all over it. The quick screen to the right (to Julio) seems to work well enough with the timing, but the bubble left is going to absolutely bury us in a game. It's going to go for a pick-6 at the most inopportune time possible sooner or later.

That play takes entirely too long to develope. No bubble screen should have the QB dropping back when he's already in shotgun formation and McElroy does it EVERY SINGLE TIME. He's bobbles snaps on more than one occasion too, and thrown it out there. I'm telling you! That play has disaster written all over it.

Someone should give Dre the nickname "Neon Deon", cause that joker can't tackle sh**. Deon Sanders was legendary for his ability to cover receivers and return kicks, but he wouldn't tackle anyone to save his life. He wasn't hearing it. I'm not even going to bring up the blown coverages that occur EVERY SINGLE GAME HE PLAYS.

The defense continues to play undisciplined. The defense of the option tonight is just another example of that. We stopped it a couple of times, but for the most part, it was horrible. One one play BAMA had 3 defenders on the QB. No one on the pitch man. On another play, Barron had the QB sealed and forcing him to pitch. I believe it was Lester (might have been Mosely) who came flying in to assist on the QB.........leaving a wide open pitch man.

WOW! I guess if our plan was to leave the pitch man wide open all night long, it worked to perfection.

I'm just over it. I really am. I know we're young on defense, but I've just had it with this team this year. They've gotten worse every week and coming off a bye this week, but got embarressed by an LSU team that couldn't score points against Hoover if their lives depended on it. It's rediculous. They are undisciplined, can't tackle, and the offense was a paper tiger this year.

I guess I'm just frustrated at seeing the same thing week in, week out.

I agree with this post. Unlike many of the media darlings I didn't believe we'd actually make it to the NC. It was laughable but I tried to stay positive and think of the "what if" scenarios that could of allowed us a trip there. Many of those scenarios revolved around OTHER teams shooting themsevles in the foot and we came out with ugly wins...but W's none the less. But what we've seen this season is a big step backwards from last year. I'm speaking in terms of all facets of our game. Yes we lost a ton of folks but just like your son, if I can sit on my coach and guesstimate to a pretty good percentage what both we're gonna do and what the other team is going to do, and we do nothing about it should tell you something.

The screen to the left is not the only ting that McElwain needs to let go of. I'll leave it at that...

The pitch play when we had LSU was I think what sent me over the top. How in the hell do you have 3 guys defending ONE man on a option and NOBODY covering the pitch guy is beyond me. That's basic football!!!

You're not alone in being "over it" seeing this this happen each and every weekend. There seems to be small gimmers of improvement in the second quarter and then BAM we go back to sucking thru a small straw.

I feel your pain and raise a beer to help lighten the disgust.

You are right, Porkchop. It is very frustrating.

"What about that offense line huh! Hell yeah! Fewer and fewer rushing yards per game, and more and more sacks. Yeah, we hold our own against San Jose State, and I guess that's what matters."
Exactly. We really have no quality wins this season(maybe arkansas but really).

Yep....Feel your pain. Milliners not covering his man on the big third down was the worst play ive seen in along time...I expected smarter play..even though hes young still. The offense can move the ball if they want to...but they are not hungry and dont have the desire to do it each possession. And to run the same plays over and over and over..........:swear: any misdirection on defense and they are caught flatfooted....pretty bad...but oh well. Finish out strong and learn from it....:a:

I expected a rested team that would show some wrinkles on offense.
What we got was a the same stale offense quarterbacked by the same game manager that doesn't scare anybody with a decent defense.
Our defense faded as the game went on, allowing Jordan Jefferson of all people to make some plays, gimme a break.

Still happy about Alabama football moving forward, but this year has obviously been a step back.
Hopefully AJ can be a difference maker at QB next year, and the defense wont be so young.

last year's team was pretty good, this year's hasn't looked that great. still there are games remaining this year and next year and so on... as much as it stinks to lose now, at least we don't have to worry about playing oregon at the end of the year :).

Chopper, on target with the observations. And despite all the bad things that continue to occur, it's even more frustrating to see a team abandon what could have turned the game around for them.

Ingram thrives on carries . . . in the 3rd quarter, he's started to look like the Mark Ingram that we saw during the South Carolina game last year, and LSU DL actually looked like it was starting to wear down by the end of the third quarter . . . Mark was getting his touches and we were grinding some yards . . . but guess what? That's not good enough! With 8 minutes to go, we should have run the ball down their throats, that is until LSU found a way to stop it and put Bama into a legitimate passing down. We could have churned out a TD drive and ate up a lot of time.

The offensive philosophy has not been very good this season. I still have not heard a single good reason for not having Ingram and Richardson in the backfield or in the game at the same time for more than two times a year. How about in the wildcat handing the ball to the man in motion more than two times a year. How about having Richardson be the one in motion. Someone asked mcelwain this question and he responded so they will be fresh at the end of the game. Now that is a howler if I have ever heard one. Our OL is not very good which is why we need to make it harder to defend us.

A lot of great points on this post.

Our O-Line is bad and getting worse, and I think that's the key to everything falling apart.

Also, there were TOO many missed tackles on defense.
Milliner's blown coverage on that third down was just crazy and ruined what looked like was going to be a last minute comeback. There was no reason for him to break off coverage; no threat of any kind of run on that play and there sure as heck wasn't anyone in front of him. I don't want to put everything off on the kid though. He's young and coaching was obviously the problem on that play. Still, very frustrating to watch.

So, it's time to put this year into perspective and move on.
I'll cheer each week just as hard as I ever do. But, my expectation level for this year has plummeted big time.

It's a little easier to take since we had such a great great season last year.
I think a lot of people in the media thought with all our offensive firepower, we'd even be better this year.
Guess what? We're not.
We've got a lot of talent but a young, inexperienced defense and an offensive line that's just not very good.

But I still love 'em. And, we still have a hell of a coach and loads of talent.
Let's win out and see where that lands us.

Roll Tide

Forget mistakes on D for a second, our offense should be putting up atleast 31 points a game. Last year, 21 points was enough to win, why our guys arent outscoring people frustrates me.

And i isnt the playmakers it seems. Nor is it the QB.

I don't recall where I picked it up, but about a month or so ago I got wind of a "less than unified mindset" that was infecting the team. I believe that more will be revealed after the season.

I know Saban must like to keep it simple on offense and build a defense that can win championships.
But this years D is a green bunch, that seems to be lacking a real leader.
And then your stuck with a boring offense that doesn't put up points on the good teams.

I would like to see a new OC, doesn't seem like we ever catch a team off guard with a play call.
There has to be something more innovative we could try on offense.

No offense to anyone here but if one needed proof that we as a fanbase were spoiled last season all they would need to do is point to this thread.

Well, you're absolutely right, Core. I'm just spoiled. That's exactly what it is. I mean, I've been spoiled from being a Bama fan for 38 years of my life. I am especially spoiled from the Shula years. Let's not forget the Dennis Francione years either. Damn! I'M JUST SPOILED!!!! I'm a spoiled, rotten, bastard. Oh......my bad! Dubose was great too. Don't want to forget about him. Can't leave him out of th convo.

Yeah, we're all just a bunch of spoiled BAMA fans is all.

NEWSFLASH FOR YOU: 2010 looks a lot like 2004. I trust Saban and consider him the best coach in the country, but this year's team looks a lot like the teams did in 2003 and 2004. If you can't see or admit that on your own, that's your issue. Not mine.

This team is not performing.

I expected the defense to sruggle this season. I never bought into the "we won't miss a beat" preseason talk. You do not lose 9 starters and not feel a drop off. The offense has no excuse, flat out they just havent played up to par. The main problem I have is we have no identity on offense. Our identity used to be power running and playaction passing. Now it seems we just run a bunch of sets and formations and are not real good at any of it. I miss the days of the ace set power 0 and cramming it down our opponents throats.
