Louisville coach Bobby Petrino spoke to the media after Alabama's 51-14 win over the Cardinals Saturday night.

Here's a rundown of what he said:

Petrino: "We got beat by a better football team. There's no question about that. They're very good. They did a great job -- their offense, their defense. They beat us in special teams. They out-coached us. So, basically, we got beat in all phases of the game."

On Louisville QB Jawon Pass: "It was a tough night for him. I thought he came out and completed some passes. He was competing. Made some good escapes and runs. And then there was a point where he got overwhelmed a little bit by their pressure and their different blitzes that they used. They threw a lot at him. They brought guys from different sides and checked when he checked. And they're a very good football team, so we can't have the interception late. The interception early, he just put too much air on the ball, and they went and got it. It was a really good defensive play."

On when Alabama's pressure started to overwhelm Pass: "It was, I thought, the early part of the third quarter, and they ran through our offensive line a few times. They switched things and brought pressure a couple times that got us that he had a lot to focus on downfield what they were doing, plus what they were doing on the front."

On the lack of success in the running game: "We didn't get to remove the line of scrimmage much, and then we got behind the sticks and had to throw the ball and then get some negative yards on sacks. But we weren't able to move the line of scrimmage. And it's kind of a different tale between what they did and what we did. They were able to move the line of scrimmage. Running back had four yards and then contact on other yards, and we weren't able to get that done."

On whether having such a tough opening game could be a good thing for Louisville moving forward: "Yeah, it has to. It has to help us. We're out there competing against some of the best players in the country and great coaching. We've got -- like I told the players, this is not failure if we learn from it. If we don't learn from it, then it is. But if we learn from it and come back and know how to work harder, know how to prepare better, know how to concentrate and focus during the game, tackle better. We missed some tackles, particularly in special teams that you can't miss."

Let me once again clarify the obvious, Petrino is an azzhat of a person. Coach Bryant said I know class when I see it, this dude wouldn't know it if it came in a suppository form.

Louisville vs. Alabama Quick Postgame Thoughts

CardinalSports.com - Louisville vs. Alabama Quick Postgame Thoughts

It was a rough opening night for the Louisville football team as the Crimson Tide cruised to a 51-14 victory over the Cardinals. While it would be easy to look at several negative takeaways, it's important to try to put things into perspective and see if there was anything positive to takeaway from their week 1 performance.
- Let's get a few noticeable disappointing/concerning aspects out of the way first. The Louisville defense and special teams had issues with tackling tonight. Alabama is a tough team for anyone to bring down but there were several plays, such as the Alabama kickoff return for a touchdown, where Louisville's players just couldn't find a way to bring the ball-carrier down despite multiple opportunities.
- The secondary also had some concerning moments as they got burned several times. This is an inexperienced secondary that has a lot of room to grow but the performance tonight was disappointing to say the least.
- Louisville has to get the penalties cleaned up. There were far too many tonight.
- One final area that was particularly concerning was Louisville's inability to run the football. Again, Alabama is a difficult team to run the ball against period, but I thought that Louisville's offensive line could open up more holes and Louisville's running backs could capitalize. Comparing the Alabama running game to Louisville's and the Crimson Tide were repeatedly able to make the first guy (or first several guys) miss whereas the Cardinals could not.
- Alright, it's time to leave the negatives behind and keep in mind Louisville did play Alabama tonight. The Nick Saban coached team is an absolute juggernaut so it's hard to have expected such an inexperienced Louisville team to come in the game and hang with the #1 team nationally and defending national champions.
- I thought by far the biggest positive of tonight was the play of Puma Pass. He did throw 2 interceptions but all in all I don't think he could have commanded the offense any better than he did. Pass escaped the pocket when needed, showed an impressive arm with good accuracy, and was overall just a stabilizing presence on a night when the offense sputtered.
- Especially in the first half, before the defense started getting worn down and demoralized, the defensive line was able to put quite a bit of pressure on Tua. This appeared to come from a combination of an aggressive scheme as well as good individual performances. While this was a positive, the negative component came from injuries to Mike Boykin and Jonathan Greenard, two very important players on the defensive line.
- Hassan Hall had a nice kickoff return that showcased his speed. Going forward it would be great to see Hall back there, as well as getting some carries. Along with Hall, I was really hoping to see Colin Wilson more as he seems to just have explosiveness that is unmatched among the other 'big' backs.
- The defense rotated a LOT of guys in tonight which is good to see going forward because it limits fatigue, but it's also important because young guys got some experience against the cream of the crop. Of note, guys like Jarrett Jackson, Dejmi Dumervil Jean, Chandler Jones, Marlon Character etc.

That's all I can really muster up for this opening game as it was definitely a hard one to watch. This game isn't the end of the world and the Cardinals will get a couple weeks to really make some positive progress.

He is the worst and an absolutely abysmal coach/recruiter on the defensive side. It was pathetic when he was at Louisville before and it was pathetic when he was at Arkansas.

He is the worst and an absolutely abysmal coach/recruiter on the defensive side.
In the pre-game one comment that was made had to do with Jaylen Smith having an appendectomy and how he hadn't had any contact in practices. When I heard it my reaction was, "I'm betting none of them have had much contact."

He didn't let his defense work/defend/hit his offensive guys when he was in Fayetteville and that does not appear to have changed.

He couldn't care less about defense. He doesnt give a damn what his defensive coaches do or the players, just dont put a hard lick on his offense and hes good. How anyone thinks a defense can be halfway decent with a head coach that just flat out doesnt care is beyond me. At some point you would think one of these schools would get that.
