So it has been a while since I stopped by,I was wondering if you guys think Dooley can get the job done for us? I know we are better off by far on a standpoint of integrity...cause if you don't have that ,what do you have. I mean can he get it done from a coaching standpoint. I figure you guys know a heck of alot more about him than me....BTW i never got to say congrads on the NC.

Dooley is a solid, solid hire. People are going to talk because he isn't a big splash hire, but give him a few years and he'll have Tennessee back at the top of the East.

I agree...I think he is a good hire. At first I thought they would go after someone more established...a little older..but they have taken a " calculated bet " IMO and it could pay huge dividends. I dont agree with the comparisons to the Alabama / Mike Shula hire....Dooley has tons more fire and drive than Shula had. If the school, fans, and players buy into it and support him 100% through thick and thin...you could find yourself with a very grateful and LOYAL head coach for many years. If he can recruit good kids and maintain a good staff...I think he has TN on track again very soon.

Yes, I think he can get it done. However the administrators will have to take a "hands off" approach and let him handle the program his own way. They can't be telling him which coaches he has to hire, keep or fire. He's going to have to be given time to recruit the players he wants to run the type of organization to which he's just been handed the reigns.
I'm sure that in due time his own version of "the process" will unfold and begin to move your program forward.

I think it's a great hire. As long as the administrators and players buy in. I think one of the things that has made Saban so successful is that he was given the keys to the program and can do whatever he wants and that has translated onto the field. Dooley isn't the big name that people were wanting, but I think he'll be fine if given the time and the freedom to do what he wants and how he sees fit. Time will tell.

A good hire compared to the colossal mistake Hamilton made with Kiffin. However, it raises a lot of questions in my mind.

  1. The last coach at La. Tech, Bicknell, had a slightly better winning percentage than Dooley. Bicknell now finds himself in the NFL as a position coach. Is that Dooley's calling as well? There is no doubt his W vs L record is enough to make people skeptical—at the least bewildered.
  2. Granted he's got two years at the helm of a football program. Is his program going to be similar to Shula's at Bama? One thing is for certain...Shula had a better recruiting base.
  3. The timing of this perplexes me as well. Considering the number of recruits that left at the last part of LK's tenure one can't help but think this was a stop gap measure trying to save a recruiting class.
  4. IF speculation comes true how well will he do with the looming possibilities of sanctions?
  5. Going back to #2. Vince Dooley - Derek Dooley...Don Shula - ....

It's my opinion he needed a few more years as a head coach before taking a program over like UT's. Sure, we've seen coaches come from smaller schools and move to upper-tier BCS type jobs in the past. BUT, those who were successful in the BCS conferences were also successful at smaller schools.

I thought UT was, at best, a 7-5 team in 2010 with Kiffin. This hire doesn't change that opinion at all.

5a. Bobby Bowden - ..... , Bobby Bowden - ..... , Lou Holtz - ......

Has any son of a good HC ever been one themselves?

I can't even attempt to speak on him. I know absolutely nothing about him and I have seen his teams play 0 times. With that said he does seem to have a ton of class which is at the least something they gain over that piece of garbage that left.

Dooley is ok, but there's a reason he was the 4th coach offered the position (after Calhoun, Cutcliffe, and Whittingham--and that's not including the rumored offer to Lovie Smith).

UT will win between 6-9 games every year of his three-year tenure before they go in a different direction.

Saban took the time and trouble to make a phone call recommending Dooley the Younger. Now, I know Coach and Mrs. Saban have a lake house near the older Dooleys' lake house. And I think they are friends. So, did Coach Saban make the call as a favor to his friends. Or, did he make the call because he believes in the young Dooley?

I think, Saban being Saban is an honest guy and having worked with the young man he knows him. So if Coach Saban recommends Dooley, who are we to disagree?

Muschamp was offered too. But, with the "great" reporting that was done there is only ONE that people can say for certain were offered and that is Dooley. But, all media outlets said Muschamp was offered a ton of money to coach UT.

Here's my .02: As the others said, he MIGHT be a good hire IF the beaurocrats will leave him alone to build. But if it takes him more than a couple of years to get some splashy big wins and recurrent winning seasons, will it be a Mike Shula situation all over again? There are so many ambiguous "what if's" and it's just impossible (and I'm sure frustrating for you!) to calculate this...I think it's as good or better a hire as many that have happened in the last few weeks. It's just a tenuous situation for him and the program; just have faith, I guess! Good Luck.

I think Dooley is a good kid, that actually has an ounce of integrity about him. I like that.

Can Dooley get the job done? I personally wouldn't go in under the premise that I have to hire the University's coaches and keep them employed because the U can't afford to let them go. You've got different philosophies and personalities in this bunch and with people like Lance Thompson on staff, Dooley is likely headed for some trouble IMHO.

I think Dooley can do a nice job, but I'm not sure now this is all going to work out under the current circumstances.
