Grateful for second chance

Daniel Hood wishes he had acted differently in 2003, but his actions since a terrible event that year paved the way for a second chance at Tennessee. Story

Daniel Hood, a 19-year-old defensive end/tight end at Knoxville Catholic, signed a scholarship offer on Tuesday and will join coach Lane Kiffin's first recruiting class in the fall.
"We didn't go about this lightly," Kiffin said in a statement. "We spent a lot of time researching the issue and talking to a lot of people who are well respected in the community. Everyone spoke very highly of Daniel. He's a very bright young man who wants to move past this incident and be a good representative for the team, the university and the community."
Tennessee received a letter of support for Hood from the victim.
"He is becoming a very mature adult and will be a great asset to any college and to society as a whole," the letter read.
Hood told The Knoxville News Sentinel, which first reported the story, that he's tried to learn from the crime.
"I had a good friend tell me I should go as far west as possible," Hood told the newspaper. "But I don't think that it's a situation that I should try to avoid. It was heinous. It was awful. Any bad thing you could say about it would probably fit it. But I think it's not trying to put it in a corner and forget it ever happened. I think you have to take it and learn from it and grow from it. ... I've got a debt to [the victim] that I can never repay, just trying to throw it away like it never happened would be the worst thing I could do for her."
Knoxville Catholic principal Dickie Sompayrak did not return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.
According to court records, Hood and another teenager were charged in 2003 with assaulting a 14-year-old girl. The victim's legs and wrists were tied and her eyes and mouth were covered with duct tape before she was raped at the Sullivan County home of Hood's father.
Robert Sanico, then 17, pleaded guilty in adult court to charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated rape and is serving a 10-year prison sentence.
Hood's case went through juvenile court, where he was found delinquent and ordered into a rehabilitation program at the Mountain View Youth Development Center in Dandridge. While in state custody, he enrolled at Knoxville Catholic High School.
As a football player there, the 6-foot-5, 255-pound Hood helped the team win its first state championship and was named the 2008 Class 3A Mr. Football.
"Daniel made a terrible mistake a number of years ago and was involved in a very bad thing," Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton said in a statement. "He's very remorseful and has worked hard to turn his life around. Catholic High gave him a second chance, and he lived up to expectations. We feel like he has earned the chance to continue that."

All I know, is when I was 14, I know I wasn't tying someone up with my friend raping them. In my opinion he should be where his buddy is that helped him. In prison for more then 10 years though.

What kind of 14 year old even has them kinda thoughts ?

Sorry, just a touchy subject to me. I know we can all change but something of that nature just baffles me.

That was sad to read. You can't help but wonder what CLK and crew are thinking. Do they think this kid is rehabilitated to some point that he can wonder around a college campus for 3-5 years and not get into any type of altercation. Before they did away with the athletic dorms, I may have given CLK and crew a pass since you had curfews and you could keep a tight reign on these kids. Now, you have to shake your head and wonder "what in the hell is he thinking?"

Yesterday I read the court documents relating what the specifics were on this case in terms of what they did.

It was very graphic and far worse than this article explains. They taped her down multiple times, removed the tape to move her into a different position all while she struggled. She was sodomized with a toilet plunger handle as well as raped.

She was bound like livestock and raped all while these two evil little sh&%s laughed about it.

I can't even hardly talk about this anymore it makes me so mad.

I would kill him. Not let him play football.

I should probably have more forgiveness in my heart than that, but having a 12 year old daughter I find it hard to give the little bastard any sympathy.
It is the poor girl who should be given his free ride.

Great recruiting Tennessee. Great job.

I'm done with this topic.

Jesus, Kiffen is the dumbest man in the conference, no doubt about it now. How can a player such as this ever be anything but a division between players and between fans.

I honestly could never cheer for him. Certainly couldn't wish him the very best and hoped he excelled as a player and a student.

Nope, not me. Someone who does that, at any age, is bringing with him some pretty stinky baggage. Years later, if he had really changed, I could possibly stand next to him in a grocery store line.

But, you are putting this person in front of small children. Kids hear things and they will be hearing about a team's rapist and how brutal it was. They listen to their older siblings and they absorb that kind of crap. My daughter will not be a fan of a team that feels it needs to scrape the bottom for a recruit.

That isn't something I want my 6 year old daughter overhearing, or hearing in passing, or faintly catching a wisp of rumor in the hallways at school about.

Not to mention the obliteration of our every halfway defensive argument for a rapist being on the team that we support.

I certainly would not wish to be put in a position, as a college football fan, to feel like I somehow, someway needed to defend the honor and the 2nd chance of a sadomasochistic rapist.

This was not a drunk rape or a high rape or any other kind but the worst kind of rape, a violent one. This son of a ***** has some evil in him and it will remain somewhere inside of him for the rest of his life.

I agree with most of what has been said in the other posts. At 13 or 14 you know the difference between right and wrong. There is no way he deserves a spot on any college football team. I think tennessee will regret signing him.

I would not kill him, but he should be as anatomically correct as a ken doll.

Kiffin mentions moving past it. Does he actually think anyone is ever past it? Just ask the girl they did that to. I wonder if she is past it.

Another brilliant move by Kiffin....

She has written a letter in support of the rapist FWIW

This girl had duct tape over 70% of her body

WOW...she has to have zero self respect. Or a stronger faith than me.....I just cannot believe that.
I would venture to guess she was pressured into verbally "forgive" him. Either way, forgiveness from a victim is not what it appears to be. Victims use forgiveness as a way to heal and move past what happened to them. Good for her. Glad she is able to do this. Him however, he has made comments that reflect his unwillingness to accept his role and truly know he done wrong. He states "he was there when the incident occured and did nothing to stop it and that was wrong?" What the hell. He help hold her down, duct tape her and watched her get molested by a plunger! When asked if he wanted to join in he states "no man, that's my cousin". Again, WTF? So if it would have been another innocent giel of no relation he would participate?
This dude shows no remorse nor accountibility for his actions. Though he has been throught the leagl process and did what the courts mandated, he was still basically given a free pass by the courts and now TN has brought him inot the fold. I ask why?
Maybe when Kitten tore his shirt off he saw potential?:headscratch:

My exact thought. Rape is so hideous on so many levels. From women I've read about and seen on TV they never get over it. It is such a terrible violation that has a way of creeping into all aspects of a woman's psyche. I don't think Kiffin has the right to mention moving past it.

I dont think there is nothing wrong with this post. I think the public should be aware of things of this nature. No reason to try and cover this up. Let it be known. You don't have to open it up and keep posting in here if it is too disturbing for you.

I just thought it was an interesting topic that TN is scooping down to a very low level to pick up guys. They are very shallow in this position. Do you think they would have signed him if it was a position they were stacked in ? I highly doubt it.

This subject is a little too touchy for me to fully comment on, as is most rape cases.

I definitely thought he should be forgiven given that it was when he was younger. However, hearing all the things done to the poor girl he should be in jail...not playing college football.

This is where the term juvenile goes out the window when you do something so hideous and horrendous.
