All the fun jokes aside you guys have been having over on your home forum (and I understand and hold no-ill will) we will be ready to talk some football over here...it's something we have a decent grasp of as a concept.

Technique.

Zero: nose to nose with the center
One: Gap A
Two: nose to nose with a guard
Three: Gap B, or outside leg of the guard.

FWIW, on gaps....

Defense gaps, as the offense sees them, are a bit different...but I digress.

With regards to gaps...

Our front four don't really play any specific gap assignment. They did earlier in the year, but do to injuries the alignments changed significantly. If you watch the TCU and BYU games, you will notice that right before the snap, our defensive line shifts on EVERY play. This was done due to our weight loss up front. As someone said earlier we have to rely on quickness and execution. Therefore, we confuse the blocking schemes at the last moment. this has tended to create open lanes for our linebackers to take on the runner out of the backfield. I haven't watch much SEC football this year, but I think you will find this very different that what you saw most of the year from opposing defenses.

Don't underestimate the effect that this has as in addition to confusing the blocking schemes, it causes the offensive linemen to flinch or jump much more than normal creating an illegal procedure penalty.

Is there a site out there that has archived video's of your football games this year?

I've looked over ESPN360 and the last one I noticed last night, granted I wasn't looking very closely, was the Utah State contest.

That's freakin' lame.

If a line knows the snap count, there is no reason a false start should EVER happen. That's all about discipline, concentration, and understanding what your assignment is...

I'd have to go back and look to be sure...but off the top of my head I'd say we've had less than 5 false starts called on us, all year.

With that in consideration...we've seen a few defensive lines.

It will take a bit more than a shift to confuse a line with two first team All-Americans and an all-conference player.

The more I look at and watch the Utah defense, the more I am convinced that they are smoke and mirrors.

Smoke doesn't slow down a rushing attack, and mirrors shatter.

What is Utah's base defense? If you knew this you could pretty much guess what techniques they might line up in.

It's a 4-3 base that uses a NT instead of two DT's so the alignment of the front 4 isn't something you can just pull out and say, "this is it."

When you are looking at individual match-ups, you can't pretty much "guess" what technique a NT is going to line up in...far to many variables.

Heck, the guy they have playing NT is good enough, and quick enough, to line up in a 10, 20 or 30 technique as well if they chose to...
