Sam Cunningham was just interviewed on ESPN. He debunked the story of Coach Bryant bringing him into the Alabama locker room after they lost to USC in 1970.

Mr. Cunningham said that Coach Bryant spoke to him in the hall after the game and congratulated him, but he never went into the Alabama locker room.

The more you know...

And Wilbur Jackson, first African-American recruit, was already on the Bama team when we played in 1970. He just couldn't play due to freshmen rules. So the transition was on even without the beatdown by Sam the Bam we got in B'ham.

While we're talking numbers and letters and such, one quick question: Is there some type of "cup" mandate for the USC cheerleaders? You know, the ones wearing the sweaters on the sidelines?

Anecdotal evidence would suggest the answer to be a resounding "yes".

That's been debunked many times, there has even been books and documentaries made about it. Bear did schedule that game to try and show the state what black athletes could for the team, but he had already brought some black players in (just not played yet). It was all a part of Bear's attempt to integrate the team while some of the still very racist people in the state not throwing backlash at him or the school.

My dad told me that after that game his brother, very racist and former KKK member, said, "well damn if we're gonna play em Bear better get his ass out there and get some of them colored boys himself!" Mission accomplished.
