revisiting this one last time today......There can simply be no doubt that Auburn made a deal with the devil at some point. I don't know the devil's name though. That's the problem. Without knowing who got what and how much, you don't have a case. But the ironies of this season for Auburn are just too large to overlook:
Sign Newton after barely recruiting him, taking him from MSU, who had a head coach that recruited him from high school.
The fact that Alabama wins the national title the season before Auburn is in line to play for it. That's not just irony. That seems like a planned, sell-our-soul event. It's just too ironic.
The connection of Milton McGregor to Auburn UNiversity, and his legal troubles with the FBI knowing about conversations between him and other people. The FBI has remained fairly quiet on this. So far.
The decision to hire a guy like Gene Chizik, who had been a failure as a head coach at Iowa State. Speaks volumes of what the expecations of him were, coming into the job.
Auburn's average at best recruiting for several years, and then, suddenly, landing a near top-class for 2010. That isn't something that comes from nowhere. Be it negative recruiting or what-have-you, they had a gigantic class. Damn near had two of the three top running backs. Signed probably the best QB prospect in the country.
Finally, Newton's past. Here's a guy who has a decent history of poor judgement, or just blatant disregard for rules and regulations. Tickets, cheating in class, stealing stuff....Just looks a guy anyone else would stay away from, UNLESS IT WAS THOUGHT TO BE A SLAM DUNK ON THE FIELD.
I can't ignore the ironies of their season. I just can't.
