Well... Marrone was... but, I don't think it was a bad hire at the time of the hire (especially since O'Brien came with him). Safe to say though, had Saban known that Marrone was going to check out and not put in the work, he'd have never hire him.
But weren't O'Brien and Marrone a package deal?

So you were happy with O'Brien, Golding and Marrone?
Hindsight is 20-20. At the time, all of those hires seemed relatively positive.

Bill O'Brien: Former Texans HC that took Houston to the playoffs on numerous occasions. Did outstanding managing that dumpster fire at Penn State, and the only time Christian Hackenburg was relevant was with Bill as his head coach. What indication was there at he would be bad hire outside of his infamous feud with Deshawn Watson?

Pete Golding: Defensive coordinator at UTSA who had good results as the DC there in 2017 (I think they had a top 10 defense too). Also, Pete Golding was thrown into a really shitty situation and made the best of it IMO. Tosh Lupoi was supposed to be the next great Alabama DC, and ended up being a total bust. Golding took over the DC duties and had relatively decent results being the DC.

Doug Marrone: Former Saints OC, Syracuse HC, Buffalo Bills HC, and Jacksonville HC. Relatively positive results everywhere he has been outside of Jacksonville. And I would add that he actually almost took Jacksonville to the Super Bowl in 2017. That doesn't seem like a bad hire to me.

Saban having bad hires would be like if he hired Ted Roof as our DC and Dave Radar as our OC.

Just my opinion. I believe he's way closer to heading to the lake than everyone else.
I actually agree with you as well, but some Alabama fans are acting like the program is similar to Bobby Bowden's FSU teams in the 2000s. We just went 11-2 and finished #5 in the country and some Alabama fans are freaking out for no particular reason.

They really don't. You'll occasionally see them as a secondary; rarely a primary.
OK, cool. What I meant was most NFL guys don't even like the thought of recruiting, as in would he view recruiting as a negative, and not be remotely interested.
