Texas Tech University president Guy Bailey will interview for the presidency of the University of Alabama on Wednesday.

Bailey, an Alabama native with bachelor's and master's degrees in English from UA and a doctorate in English linguistics from Tennessee, has been president of Texas Tech since 2008. He is the top candidate and the only one being brought in to interview, UA System spokeswoman Kellee Reinhart said Friday.

A UA System press release announcing the interview did not definitively say Bailey is the UA board of trustees' choice for the post.

However, officials at Texas Tech are confident that Bailey will be offered the job in Tuscaloosa, according to reports from the Lubbock (Texas) Avalanche-Journal today.

“He's the sole finalist, and it's very obvious that he will get the job,” Texas Tech system chancellor Kent Hance told the newspaper. “He talked to me and informed me of what he is going to do. ... He's an alum, and that's his alma mater. That's his chance to be back in his home, and I understand that. That was kind of the way I felt when I got the offer at Tech.”

If hired, Bailey would replace former UA president Robert Witt, who was named chancellor of the UA System in March after the retirement of Malcolm Portera. During Witt's tenure as president, which began in 2003, the university's enrollment grew from 20,000 students to 31,747 students.

“The Presidential Search Advisory Committee gathered extensive data from faculty, staff, students, alumni and community leaders about the experience and attributes that should define the University's next President,” Witt said in the press release. “As one would expect, the opportunity to lead the Capstone drew tremendous interest from sitting campus presidents across the country.

“One of our best and brightest graduates, Guy Bailey knows his alma mater and his home state from top to bottom – and he brings a wealth of national leadership experience that is an impressive match for the selection criteria developed by the Search Committee,” Witt said. “I am very pleased that he has agreed to interview with the Board of Trustees next week.”

Bailey will interview with the UA System's board of trustees Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Bryant Conference Center on the UA campus. The meeting will be open to the public.

“Guy Bailey has done an excellent job at Texas Tech, increasing momentum and positioning the campus as a major engine for economic development,” interim UA President Judy Bonner said in the release. “We are proud to count him among our graduates and look forward to welcoming him back to campus next week.”

Before leading the Lubbock, Texas university Bailey served as chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and provost and executive vice president at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He has also worked at the University of Nevada, the University of Memphis, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Emory University.

The Montgomery native attended the University of Alabama from 1968 to 1974.
