Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts among Heisman favorites; Tommy Tuberville breaks down who has edge
Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and new Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts among a group listed as favorites to win Heisman Trophy.
Spring football isnāt quite here yet, but that hasnāt stopped oddsmakers from taking action on next yearās Heisman Trophy race.
And wouldnāt you know there are some familiar faces to the state of Alabama involved in the discussion.
BetOnline updated their odds to win the Heisman Trophy.
Clemsonās Trevor Lawrence is the favorite at 3.5/1, followed by Alabamaās Tua Tagovailoa at 5/1.
At 6.5/1, right behind Tagovailoa, is Oklahomaās Jalen Hurts, who backed up Tagovailoa at Alabama before transferring.
So, with the Tagovailoa-Hurts dynamic, it begs the question, who do you think has the better chance, today, of winning the Heisman Trophy?
College football analyst and former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville joined me and Lee Shirvanian on āThe Opening Kickoffā on WNSP-FM 105.5 Tuesday. He answered the question.
āThereās no doubt Tua,ā Tuberville said. "He can throw the football, and thatās what you have to do.
"Jalenās got a lot of work to do. Iāve been around that system Lincoln Riley runs. He doesnāt run many plays. He runs 4 or 5 plays. Itās a very simple system. Jalen will learn it very quickly. The problem heās got is he has to throw the ball down the field consistently 15 or 20 yards down the field with deep crossing routes.
āThe reason he got beat out at Alabama was because of that reason.ā
Still, it was Hurts - not Tagovailoa - who threw for a touchdown and ran for another to rally No. 1 Alabama to a 35-28 victory over No. 4 Georgia in the SEC title game. Hurts completed 7 of 9 passes for 82 yards, to go along with five carries for 28 yards in less than a quarter of action.
āNow, I like him,ā Tuberville said. āI think Jalenās a winner. I think heās going to win a lot of games for Oklahoma, but can he run that exact offense that Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield ran? Itās going to be tough. Itās an offense where you have to live off your arm and not off your legs.ā
