🏀 🏆 SEC Men's Basketball Tournament -

That seat will probably be a little warm next year.
I agree. I'm glad I missed this game tonight.
Pippen Jr was right... a very beatable team.

Just a really disappointing season based on not just my expectations, but the expectations set by Oats. This team has zero leadership, zero composure, a sea floor basketball IQ, and very little toughness. I hope they can win just 1 game in the NCAA tournament, but at this point I doubt it, and honestly I have little interest in even watching it regardless.

100% accurate!

I want JD back for another year, and I think he might actually return. But if he decides to declare, in no way am I going to be upset. He is a walking turnover. He shows flashes, but that's it. And he's awful on defense.

It's not all on him though. Just a freshman.

Just go ahead and end the season now so we do not have to watch this team play another game. No way this team will do anything in the tournament. At this point no idea why they are actually making the tournament. They are living off the early OOC schedule but they are at best average in the SEC. One basketball guy (at least more so than me) I talked to thought the SEC has seen Oats teams so they have adjusted. He thought they would struggle in the SEC tournament but do fine in the NCAA. The NCAA teams Bama plays will not be as familiar with Bama was his argument. I just do not see it. One and done would be my expectation.

While I agree this season is over and a bust, I'm not going to say they have his system figured out. We just miss shots, plain and simple. Our threes are very open looks. I'm not saying we have ten seconds to stare the rim down, but we miss a ton of open shots and even shots by the rim. I think his system is fine as long as we can make some damn shots. That of course is what makes the good teams good and the bad teams bad, the ones that can get it in the basket.

Consistency is what kills me. Our first half was pretty great. If you tell me after the first half that that game would have scored 158 total points I would have thought you were crazy. We are a 20 minute team.

One other point I want to make that I believe does fall on coaching, but maybe not for the same reason some may think, is our ball handling. People keep saying it's learned behavior from AAU and younger leagues, so why are we recruiting it if it can't be fixed VERY easily? A lot of these guys will gladly be one and done if they can, so why bring in a project in hopes of getting him for years to work out his flaws only to have him play a bad season and then leave the program and leaving a not so great taste in the mouth of fans, legacy, and on film?

Our problem is far from teams adjusting to his style of offense. We're second best in the conference in offensive efficiency and #13 in the country in scoring offense. I don't get why people constantly complain about his system, when it's not the issue. We get more open looks than any team in the country.

The issues are two things: players like JQ and JD being the only adequate ball handlers and defense.

The only two adequate ball handlers on this team are JD and JQ. JD has a lesser usage rate than guys like Releford, Obasahan, and Kira, but turns the ball over almost twice as much. JQ has started doing it too, as we saw on three straight possessions against Vanderbilt where he straight up lost the ball without anyone guarding him. And when you don't have other guys who can beat anyone off the dribble, you get the carelessness that we've seen this year. That is far and away my biggest issue with Oats is that he gives his guys so much offensive freedom, that he doesn't really punish any of the guys for awful turnovers. He'll sit anyone who doesn't take charges, give effort, play defense, etc.. But turnovers? Nope.

Then defensively, it's just a complete freaking mental breakdown. The guys were locked in and played really well against Vanderbilt at first. Then once they realized shots weren't going to fall and the officials were dictating the game, they stopped playing. Same old shit that has been the case the entire year. Last year with Herb, Reese, Petty, Primo, Bruner, and Keon, it didn't matter if shots weren't falling. We went almost an entire month where the offense went flat, but were still getting winning because guys were locked in on defense. This group is mentally weak and will stop giving effort if their playing poorly offensively. Sign of a team with no leadership.

I think we're going to see a mass exodus with this roster regardless of what happens in the tournament. Whether it's guys who are told by Oats or guys who don't like the culture. There were some rumors that Shack may return, but I think he's gone. Gary and Keon Ambrose may be gone as well. The one I don't want to leave is Miles.

But Oats and Hogdson are going to have a big challenge of grabbing guards. I don't have any concern about who they grab in the off season because they're usually solid in getting transfers. But Pearl and Musselman have both shown that you can absolutely build a roster through the transfer.

"Out of its 17 shot attempts inside the 3-point line in the second half, Alabama only made eight of them. Eight of its nine misses were layups. The Tide had a sizable lead on the glass, out-rebounding the ‘Dores, 54-32, including an 18-5 edge in offense boards and an 18-7 lead in second-chance points. Turnovers remained an issue, though, as UA committed 18 of them, compared to 11, which led to 16 points for Vandy. Alabama gave up 54 points in the 2nd half."

I watched the first half and we played very good defense. We did not tear it up shooting the ball in the first half. We had decent ball movement, good looks at shots and other than a few players taking some quick shots we did a pretty good job. If the players had played with the same intensity the second half as they did the first, this game is not close. Very disappointing lose IMO.

CNO has a few problems going into next season he has no leadership and little talent. Gurley was a disappointment this year last night he played 12 min with 2 pts 2 rebs and 3 TO's he could not get out of his own way fumbled and stumbled. We know he is back.

I believe this roster needs to be gutted. Not sure what Rojas is planning to do IMO he is not talented enough to play for an elite team in the SEC.
He is 6'8" but plays 6'4" he can't jump he did not have a single dunk this year. I question whether Gary or Holt have the talent to play for an elite SEC team. We got nothing out of Tchikou this year.

We have four freshman and a JUCO player coming in CNO needs to clear way to hit the transfer portal and get some talented players with experience.

Totally agree. This team had brief glimpses of being a solid to great team but for the most part, they are the most underachieving, weak team that I have seen in quite a while

It would be helpful of some of those he does sign have a higher IQ than those he replaces as well as talent. Every coach in BB (football as well but not as bad) is now in the one and done mode. Pearl culled his team from last season, and he did very well in the free agent market.

It's true as I mentioned earlier in this thread several players with low IQ some with bad fundamentals you don't foul jump shooters especially 3 pt shooters Miles and Ellis do this every game. You don't leave your feet to pass the ball. You don't jump out of bounds and throw the ball back in under your opponents basket that leads directly to 5 on 4. Playing under control protecting the ball TO's have been the number 1 problem with this team. This team can't defend without fouling you play defense with your feet you don't reach. Last night they knew Pippin was going to pump fake you stay on the ground and wait for your opponent to jump they took the fake every time. Pippin shot 21 FT's.

Nobody gets 21 FTs...nobody
