At just 31 years old, Tommy Rees is now with his second high-profile college football team as an offensive coordinator. He was a quarterback at Notre Dame and later became the programās offensive coordinator. Now, he is preparing for his first season at Alabama.
Working under Nick Saban comes with a lot of pressure, regardless of a personās age or official job title. Being his offensive coordinator at 31 must take it to the extreme, however.
It doesnāt help that Rees joins the program in the middle of a transition period. Now, this doesnāt mean the Tide wonāt be in contention for a national title, it just has to do with the immense amount of young, inexperienced talent on this roster.
The heart of the offense is the quarterback. Rees must choose between three: Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson and Tyler Buchner, the last of whom played under Rees at Notre Dame.
Saban doesnāt appear too worried about Rees. In fact, heās already offered high praise to the young offensive coordinator.
āHe relates well to [players],ā Saban told ESPN. āHeās a good presenter. Heās very bright and understands the game conceptually very, very well and has done a really good job of implementing our offense and adding to it things that I think will benefit us in the future.ā
Adam Rittenburg of ESPN recently shared a list of interesting new coordinators from across the country as the 2023 season approaches. Rees made that list.
āReesā ability to maximize Buchner or another quarterback will be dissected. Since 2018, Alabama leads the nation in scoring (44.3 PPG) and total QBR (91.4). Alabama also is trying to avoid going three seasons without a national title for the first time in coach Nick Sabanās tenure.
āThe pressure is on for Rees, who took heat from coach Brian Kelly while playing quarterback at Notre Dame and then quickly rose up the coaching ranks at his alma mater before leaving for Tuscaloosa.ā
This will be an interesting season all around for the Crimson Tide and Rees is one of a few key additions that could make or break Alabamaās chances at returning to the College Football Playoff.
