šŸˆ Tight ends---can someone please explain this?

My thought is that if a team can afford to not have the TE blocking, it is better to replace him with an out right receiver. If they can't afford to not to forgo the blocking of the TE, they can't pass to them obviously.

In theory, it is easier for a LB to cover a releasing TE on a pass route while also covering the run than it is to cover a WR in the slot and a RB up the middle.

It's simple as I see it. A Tight End serves two roles. Depending on his size and natural ability he may have a propensity toward one of those roles vice another.

The way things are now, a Tight End is classified as a lineman first, a reciever second. It is easy to see that in some run friendly formations a TE might be used more for blocking. In todays climate most TEs are used in that manner.

Being a TE means FIRST being able to block. Some of them block the pass better than the run and vice versa. A truly special TE can block both. If the TE can block both ways AND catch the ball then he is something special.

The primary reason you don't see more offenses using TEs to catch the ball is because most of them have a lean towards blocking with catching as almost an afterthought.

EVERYONE wants a TE who can do all three things. The trick is to find them.
