🏈 The saga of Riley Cole ... (pruned from NSD thread.)

After everything you've said... Or haven't said... It boils down to this:

You think it's OK for the staff to offer a kid a scholarship in a particular season/class, accept his commitment, and rescind this in favor of another player or another season/class.

I don't.

And as far as "not being there" when the scholarship was offered, and not wanting to speak on it, you might speak on dozens of topics a day that you aren't there for. We all do.

You're a very intelligent dude and know how this process works. You know as well as I do when the kid was first offered and/or committed, it was under the assumption he would be in THIS CLASS. The kid was clearly surprised by how the grey shirt situation unfolded.. Just as others have been before him.

I think it's important that the adults representing the program keep their word to high school kids, you believe there is a grey area (at best). And that's that.

Pissing contest is over. I've said my piece... And will repeat it again next year about this time lol

Knott is a big time pick up! So hard to pull these kids out of Mississippi... Hopefully he signs on the dotted line on NSD.

Perhaps I'm misreading your post here. A greyshirt offer is still an offer of a scholly. The University didn't rescind his offer.

In fact, here's a list of the greyshirt offers UA didn't honor...

no it's really not... there is NO binding paperwork that is signed. It's just a "promise" from the school that they will fulfil the obligation. I would find it pretty poor if a school didn't do it, but unlike the NLI that will be signed on Wednesday... there is no such thing for a "greyshirt" offer... it's just a term used in the recruiting world, but holds no binding agreement for the school and conversely no binding agreement from the recruit.

When you see these kids "signing" a "greyshirt" offer, you are seeing a kid sign a blank sheet of paper.

It's going back on your word. You offer someone a legit spot in the class then take it back AKA grey shirt, you're misleading the kid. It's as simple as that. Do you disagree with that?

Well... it's not really that way. The scholarship isn't offered until the NLI is received, signed and sent back to the school. I would guess most honest coaches look at recruiting depth and talk to the players about where they stand as the recruiting process goes on. As a 3 star kid, he maybe verbally committed to UA, but I doubt that Saban and team had ever said he was a lock to be in this class. As the year is coming to an end and the picture of this class starts to shack out... I would guess the coaches had a real talk with this kid about his chances in this class. He didn't like what he heard and has decided to go elsewhere. That's understandable, because even if he were to greyshirt... the talent level ahead of him expected to come in this class would most likely bench him anyway. If the kid is smart... he'll look elsewhere. If he truly bleeds Crimson, he'll stick it out and see where it leads...

Again... If that talk was not had on the day he was offered and/or committed, it was too late and he was mislead.

My understanding of most of these conversation with lower star recruits is that they ALWAYS have a conditional offer... Like I said before, I would be shocked to hear that Saban and team told this kid he was a lock. In years past the recruiting class for UA was pretty much closed up well before signing day and kids had already "decommitted" and/or moved on. This year is a bit different as I recruiting has stayed open until the end and it may have been harder to judge the class until now. The reality is we will never know what was said and can only go on speculation... but from the information I have heard on Saban and his recruiting over the years is that he is very upfront on these issues... so I choose to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Just because I kid Verbally commits to a team, doesn't mean that kid actually has a committable offer... In a lot of cases they don't and only do so to "show prestige" with their buddies or use it to help in recruitment from other schools that may now "want" them since team "X" wanted them... Actually, a few years ago a 4 or 5 star LB committed to the barn on national TV at an allstar game, but Auburn hadn't given him a committable offer said that they were going to have to look at the class to see if they could take him.... Completely disagree. I tend to believe the kid who's been committed for a year because he obviously wanted to be at Alabama. The same thing happens year after year where a kid is asked to grey shirt right before signing day. Some make a fuss and some don't, but it's status quo for how Saban operates. Whether it's right or wrong we all have different opinions.

Clearly the kid was blindsided. And if there was a simple explanation, why is the staff not giving him straight talk? "Look son, we told you when you committed this was a possibility". Instead there is a "miss communication"? That's bogus.

And for those who think that if he's all about Bama, he will stick it out... He WAS all about Bama, but when you're lied to or mislead you tend not to trust the program anymore.

I think most look at this from a general fan standpoint... But as a kids parent, you all would be singing a different tune.

Yep. And the kid says "5 days before signing day the staff talks to me about grey shirting and can't give me a straight answer..."

Why would he be lying? He's been committed forever... Lol.

Y'all are crazy!!
Why not include the entire quote?

“Communication was the biggest problem and when Riley asked them to give an answer, they wouldn’t give him a straight answer,” David Cole said. “We got the impression they were wanting to wait until after National Signing Day, see who they got, and then let Riley know if they wanted to grayshirt him."

Instead there is a "miss communication"? That's bogus.

I'm beginning to wonder if you're more upset about this than they are.
