A few years back there was a WR from the Gadsden area, can't remember his name. We offered him, with the understanding up front that he might end up as a gray shirt. As signing day neared, he ended up with an offer from Kentucky which did not have the gray shirt stipulation, and he took that offer. Seems tome that is the way it should work.
I remember a couple of situations where we offered gray shirts because the player suffered a serious knee injury in his senior year of HS. That was Bozeman's situation, but as it turned out his rehab went faster than expected, and a scholarship opened up so that he did not have to wait to enroll.
The classic gray shirt that worked out well for us and the player was John Parker Wilson.
Nothing is wrong with the practice as long as the school is up front about the possibility to the player.
