At our fundraiser last month, Coach Stallings said that he was adamantly opposed to a playoff. Coach isn't one to mince words. He said that if you want to win the national championship, all you have to do is go undefeated, unless you're Auburn. He says that the lost time from classess, etc., would be very detrimental.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't look at football the same as I do basketball. As much as I loved seeing Valvano win the NC in basketball, in football I want the best team to win, not a team that gets hot for two or three weeks. I wouldn't want a three loss team winning the football championship over a one loss team. I don't want regular season football games to become meaningless. A few years ago when Florida won the basketball NC, Tennessee beat Florida not once but twice during the season. What did those games ultimately mean? Absolutely nothing.
There are 65 teams in the basketball tournament now. The first thing always discussed after selections are made public are the teams that should have gotten in but didn't.
