💬 The future of donations to College Athletics - Republican tax overhaul will have an impact

While I think it's BS that donations will decrease to an amount less than satisfactory, maybe this will reign in the inflation of coaching salaries. The alumni are going to give regardless. I'm highly doubting that all of a sudden a big block of season tickets will become available. I'd be worried about the schedule causing it more than a few thousand dollar deduction the average booster donates.

Another thing to look at is the possibility of Corporations picking up the tab like they used to. I worked for a hospital in Birmingham that was owned by a Corporation (as most are these days) Until the economy tanked in 2008, the company paid a portion of my Tide Pride. It was a tax deductible donation to a University. For several years I only had to purchase one of my seats because the company paid for the other. If the "evil" companies are doing well, I wouldn't be surprised to see them do something like this again in the future. It is a break for them, and me.

Is this the argument like you didn't build that statement? Our government built the internet with our money not their money. It is so easy to separate the government vs the people in a statement like that. Because of companies paying taxes the government built the internet. Actually the military did it. Also they made the interstate system, and your little iphone or android uses satellites that we paid for. We the people are the ones that paid for all that $hit. The government should work for the people and stay out of over regulation like net neutrality. The free market system catches the cheaters and they pay for it with their life.

FYI, the military is part of the government (not sure if you're making that point). But, even if our taxes pay for something doesn't mean the government can't regulate it.

Adding 1.5 trillion dollars over the next 10 years to a national debt that currently stands at 20.6 trillion dollars. How is this a victory for the American people? Any business that runs a deficit ultimately fails. At some point in time, this all comes crashing down and the American people will be the ones that suffer because I'm sure the politicians will have covered their asses. It saddens me to know that as Americans, we are letting politicians, both Republicans and Democrats, drive this country towards peril. Yet, Americans are too busy debating the merits of their respective political affiliations. How about saying, I'm an American, not a Republican or Democrat, and lets do whats best for the people of this country, because if you take the blinders off, its not hard to see that we are losing.
I guess you had no problem with the 8 trillion obama and his band of fools added?

All these new coaching contracts suddenly got more expensive.

It's not a matter of it having an effect...it's a matter of how much based on what I've read.

That is my point. Now that the government is playing favorites with one group or another someone has to lose. In this case removing the deduction for college donations is not a good thing for sports, but the same swamp originally put that deduction in. There has to be a higher calling to support schools. They get so much money from our taxes that I suspect there is another wiener lurking in some other program that we haven't seen. I lean Libertarian more than conservative so my concern is why do we need the government regulating sports. Just let the free market handle it. Title 9, Common core, no child left behind, etc., IMO just didn't do what they originally were designed to do because the government designed it. If the government designed a mouse it would end up the size of an Elephant.. The free market lives and dies when success and failure happens. My first post about replacing donors with new donors is really valid. I will be shocked if Bryant Denny stadium looses one dime next year.

BAMA was 5th in the nation for revenue. (We beat Allbarn last year) TAM was number one with $196 million. However their donation part was $92 million. If they lose donors it will really hurt them.

BAMA like other winning schools doesn't have as big of a percentage of donors. Yes 29 mil is a lot, but BAMA would survive if they lost 10%. I just don't see that happening no mater what tax break is taken away. The swamp always finds a way.

5. Alabama — $148.9 million
1-year change: -2.8%
5-year change: +14.1%
Donations: $29.4 million
Licensing/Rights fees: $56.6 million
3-year avg. football revenue: $93.6 million
3-year avg. men's basketball revenue: $13.3 million
3-year avg. women's basketball revenue: $1.0 million

You didn't build that? You mean that time that Obama said that the richest of the rich didn't build the roads or bridges that we all use and your side twisted it to try and make it seem like something else? That one? Free market catches cheaters? Really? Did it catch all of the big banks that crashed the economy? Did it catch Wells Fargo scamming everyone (including me)? Could have swore it was regulation... Keep dreaming.

I've never discussed that subject with SLO but I guaran-damn-tee you he knows what it means. To say such--setting aside it's just asinine to suggest such--diminishes everything from that point on...

Can't you do better?

He clearly doesnt know what it means or he's lying. One or the other.

No point in arguing with the unwilling. They have dug their feet in and refuse to listen to logic. He is not an economist, accountant, financial adviser, or anything else that has a clue of the implications overall of what is happening to Americans other than themselves, so you toss him into the group that doesn't understand how their own taxes and the tax code works. They see what they want to see and will not allow anything to change their mind. It's the definition of insanity.

I love how the rich are evil because they make money, work their asses off to earn it, and are the devil because they don't walk down the street handing it out to those that didn't get an education, didn't make the most of theirselves, and anyone else that didn't capitalize on what this country offers. You don't get rich working from 9-5. if you don't know that, then that's your problem. The rich work 70, 80, 90 ,100 hours a week, yet you think it's wrong they make so much money and that it's not showing in your pocket. Well I got news for you sport, without the rich, you'd be out of a job, because a "rich corporation" most likely owns your company that probably started by an individual with great motivation. But hey, whatever keeps you energized and waking up each and every day. I personally would rather be spending these days getting excited about Santa Clause, smelling cookies, and happy I'm alive and healthy. But different strokes for different folks.

This is absolutely priceless. My views dont matter because Im not an economist or accountant yet yours do because you support anything someone with an (R) says or does? Yeah okay. It's beyond ironic any of you would have the audacity to say someone else has their heels dug in and refuses to listen. Priceless. And its even more priceless how I'm pretty much the only one on here (save for two or three others that dont say anything) with differing view points and every single one of you have no problem with attacking me and then turn around and pretend like I'm the one that attacks and I should just shut up and believe the horse shit that you believe.

You were right on about not arguing with people who will never, ever, ever look at anything with objectivity, I should have given up awhile ago. I'm just going to make sure to bookmark this thread, so I can bump in four years when our economy has been flushed down the toilet AGAIN.

Never said your viewes don't matter, simply said you rhetoric is incorrect, not true, and facts do not support. You're not an accountant or economists, so how on Earth could you honestly know how this will affect a majority of Americans? You are regurgitating what you're seeing on television, not digging into the numbers. How do I know? Because if you did dig, you'd know average family income in America is ~$75,000, which will pay less in taxes around $2,000-2,500. Run the numbers, you'll see the middle class is getting the bigger breaks. Doesn't matter if it's a $1 or $20, it's more of our hard earned money in our own pocket. Ten years from now? All speculation. Obamacare was a trainwreck from the beginning and still is. The tax breaks will be a relief for most Americans, and the ones actually paying more will be the rich you hate so much. Anyways, I'm checking out on this one because it's a lost cause dealing with folks as yourself and you obviously have a number of other fires to out out with the many others you're currently having it out with.

Sorry Birdman that I have not communicated well. Yes the big banks got caught and are no longer there. AIG got their wings clipped and so did a lot of smaller banks that ended up merging with better banks. Can't say it is one thing that caused the economic recession in 2008, but that really hurt a lot of small businesses like mine. I had to lay off 10+ year employees that were very loyal and were good honest hard working people. It just sucked. It made me realize that the government messing with anything can do more than just screw it up. I just want them to leave us the hell alone. If they lower our taxes 2% it will be welcome news to me. If it hurts college football then that will be another example of how the swamp can drown frogs. Hope you have a Merry Christmas. Your opinions are yours and I understand your passion but I do respectfully disagree.

Hey everyone that has posted in this thread. Has a lot of passion about this country. We all can be thankful that we can have our opinions and still ROLLLLTIDE ROLL. I believe we will be aright

@Birdman37 this is going to be a long hard 7 years for you if you take all this to heart. Change usually is good in the long run. I enjoyed your post
