I would imagine he would be rusty with only a week to prepare for UGA. If he is ready to play, I would suspect the next month of bowl prep would be excellent and he should be able to make an impact.
That has to be qualified since he's been running for several weeks now. In shape versus in game shape is the question.
You have the education and experience in these matters so you can correct me where I'm wrong.
It's my understanding that the typical rehab time for this type of injury and surgery is roughly six to nine months. As in, six to nine months to return to where a person was before the injury. I have a few friends who have dealt with the same thing and I've seen it take as much as 12 months for them to be to a point they feel "ready."
But then again, we've got stories like Jerry Rice and his return to action. How long was it for Rice? I seem to recall about four months.
Here's where it gets murky for those of us with "arm chair medical degrees." We can't just compare what has happened to people we know and use it to judge who quickly Lewis will return. With the medical staff at UA, combined with Lewis being an atypical case, his rehab is A LOT different than you or I would experience. He's not your normal guy, ya know?
UGA this weekend puts Lewis at roughly five months of rehab. The playoffs, six. If he's able, I can see the staff giving him 12-15 reps against UGA. I'm not holding my breath.
Another question that bears noting--does Lewis actually want to 'shirt this season? If not for the injury, he'd be looking at one of the early entree spots in the draft. IF he does return next season, we can expect him to leave with a year of eligibility left.
Let's also keep this in mind. After two injuries like he's endured, would you blame him if he decides to forego the rest of the season and look to the draft? I wouldn't. Selfishly I'd love to see him in Crimson next season. Professionally, I'd say continue to rehab and make your move now.
