Army n navy players are students. Not sailors or soldiers yet. Have to serve to earn such status

Army football players have to go through boot camp aka "Beast Barracks." All cadets do.

So, if one goes through BB and sits in a classroom learning weapons; serving.
If one goes through BB and sits in a classroom at West Point; not serving? Just because they are playing football?
If one is in BESS full time for a few years they're serving?
But if one is at the Naval Academy and playing football they're not serving?

What fine lines to be drawn.

They are serving, no question about it.

Edit, the time in college doesn't count towards their service time. Their commitment doesn't start until after.

they have to finish to get commission....
Then they are "serving" as commission officers in the military....navy,air force, army,etc

regardless of classroom material...and field training...

but..i might be wrong.....but are they students at the academy....or have they joined the military service....

i studied forestry...did months of "boot camp" in forestry school...
But wasn’t a forester til I graduated..

same for teachers...studied education....did students teaching...but dont get certificate til graduate...then are certified teachers...

different curriculum....but..same logic

ok...as per west point admissions....phone conversation today

A cadet must be at school for 2 years before they are considered "serving in the military.... "
The first 2 years...they are students not subject the code for military justice
After successfully completing the second year...the are considered "serving in the military " ( kinda like finishing undergrad and starting post graduate) ...
They are subject to the code of military justice....
But do-not receive a commission until graduation...

so some of players will be students..some will be considered "serving"
