🏈 Tackle vs. Guard

Speed for one. Things you'd notice is a shuttle drill.

Arm span is another. Andre didn't have real good footwork, but had a huge arm span.

Guesses right now? Warmack or Boswell replace Johnson.

Tyler Love or Fluker for Davis.

I was thinking Carpenter to LG and Fluker to LT and Love to RT.

Why would you want to do that?

Move a guy with a years experience starting at the most crucial position on the offensive line and put a guy there with no experience?

It's a lot easier to move a guy with little experience in at a guard. Consider, we faced two of the best defensive tackles this past weekend and they had one tackle on the day. And, that was with a first year starter at center and right guard.

So with Carpenter coming back for his senior year that means either Love or Fluker are left out. Could either one of them be viable at guard or are you looking at Warmack due to athleticism?

Maybe.

This year, it's my belief that the RG position was settled not because Barrett was just better than the other guys, it was more of a chemistry thing. I mentioned back in the fall I thought those guys were pretty equal—the ones battling for the RG position—in talent.

Now, if you look back at the last six games, you see what most would have thought to be the weakest link in our line (C and RG) happens to end up being the most consistent. Granted, we aren't getting the push we'd like, but at the same time we don't see guys bursting through the middle and causing a lot of havoc in our backfield.

In all honesty, I'd stack up the Ole Miss tackles against any we'll face in the SEC—Laurent and Powe are the best 1-2 punch for NT's in this league right now that'll we'll face.

Anyway, just taking Mike Johnson's position alone, I could see McCullough, Ross, Boswell, Warmack, Motley and even Fluker battling that out in the spring.

On a personal note, I'm a bit intrigued with the idea of having Fluker at LG, then sliding him out to LT in 2011.

and moving Barrett to the other guard slot?

do you see Pharr ever starting?? what's been his weakness?

You've lost me. Barrett is already at the other guard slot.

Pharr? He'll have to make his move next season. I hate to say it, but my gut tells me it's a player that Harbinson and Connelly just mis-evaluated.

Jones has seemed to be pretty consistent so far despite some false starts early on which can only be expected from a first year starter (Carpenter fits here too along with a few holds) What would be the pros and cons of putting Fluker at LG?

As far as next year goes, about the only con to putting Fluker at LG is that it will only be for one year.

On the pro side of things, I think it would help season Fluker to FBS level play. It will help him grasp the speed of things, which will better prepare him to slide outside when Carpenter leaves. IMHO, it is easier to plug in a new starter at guard than at tackle, much easier to provide help and cover up inexperience.
