I wouldn't have believed you if you'd told me Christion Jones would be the this ineffectual halfway through the season. Worse than that, he's cost his team possessions with his turnovers. Jones was a candidate to have a stellar season, but through six games he's been a liability.
JK Scott, y'all. The freshman is a difference maker at punter. Every time he punts he has the ability to flip field position. On a special teams unit that has plenty of detractors, he's been a bright spot that no way can dispute.
I continue to be impressed with outside linebacker Xzavier Dickson. He's playing with a different passion this year. He's physical as can be. One play he set the edge, shed a block and stretched a running play out to make a tackle. I think this is a case of a senior having aspirations to play football beyond college and knowing this is his last chance to impress. He is.
O.J. Howard's blocking has to get much, much better before he's a difference maker. On Alabama's second drive, Howard missed a block on a screen pass on first down, which cost Alabama negative three yards. It's a weekly thing, but Howard hasn't mastered blocking just yet.
The punt return team might just want to take the long way to the locker room and avoid Nick Saban. Bobby Williams might think about that too. Maurice Smith having zero awareness of where the ball was and thus giving Arkansas another easy turnover was enough to steam Saban. There are really no excuses for a return team being this bad in a game. Excuses are running thin.
The play that breathed some life into Alabama's offense should look familiar. It was the same concept of the play that Auburn used on the game-tying score from last year's Iron Bowl. It was a run-pass option and Blake Sims pulled it and hit a wide-open O.J. Howard streaking down the middle of the field.
After making his first seven field goals, Adam Griffith has hit a cruel cold spell. He's made just one of his last five attempts, including a 30-yard miss in the second quarter.
Arkansas dropped two interceptions and they were of the easy variety. Blake Sims didn't have his best accuracy in the first half.
I don't know the severity of the Amari Cooper injury, but I don't have to tell you how monumental of a loss that would be if Cooper is lost for any significant time. I'll bring you the latest as soon as I get it after the game. He played in the second half, so it doesn't appear to be too bad.
Alabama's offensive line got stonewalled for much of the night. The patented rushing attack never got on track. At the half Alabama had 11 yards rushing. 11 yards. It's tough to win that way. Not sure how much of that is a new center (Bradley Bozeman) playing. I'll have to go back and watch the film to get an accurate assessment.
I'm always amazed after Jalston Fowler makes a big play, but I shouldn't be. His key fourth quarter grab helped keep a drive alive and it wasn't an easy catch.
The one thing that told me everything I needed to do about what kind of night it was came on third and less than one with timing winding down. Coming out of a timeout, Alabama broke the huddle with 12 men on the field. And then on third and two with a chance to run out the clock, Arie Kouandjio jumps offsides.
Landon Collins might have made the play of the season with that interception. If that ball is thrown to lead the running back that's a touchdown.
