1. Your weekly scoring update: Alabama is now averaging 40.5 points per game and has scored 527 total points this season. The school record for points scored is 542 in 2014 and the record for points per game is 43.0 in 1945. Alabama needs to score 16 points to set the school record for points. Hey, remember what I said last week? "Florida only allows 14.6 points per game, so don’t expect Alabama to hang 40 next week."
2. The 54 points scored yesterday is the most allowed by Florida since the Gators gave up 62 to Nebraska in 1995. It was the second-biggest win in SEC championship game history (38 points, Auburn's win over South Carolina in 2010 was 39 points). It was the most points Alabama scored against an FBS team since putting up 55 in the 2014 Iron Bowl. The 33 points in the first half were the most in the history of the SEC championship game.
3. The defense went 4:33:03 without allowing a touchdown before Florida scored on its opening drive. But you'll remember, the streak on defense started at about the same time that the defense stopped scoring touchdowns. Minkah Fitzpatrick snapped that streak, too, scoring Alabama's 13th non-offensive TD in the first quarter. Alabama went 4:20:27 of game time without scoring a non-offensive touchdown. Both of those streaks date back to the Texas A&M game.
4. Florida finished with 30 total team carries for 0 yards. That number includes the lost yardage on sacks and on the fake punt, but even without that, the Florida running backs had 20 carries for 43 yards. Florida hadn't finished with 0 rushing yards or negative rushing yards in a game since 2011. Alabama still hasn't allowed a rushing touchdown since the Tennessee game and has only given up 3 all year. Alabama entered the game as the No. 1 rushing defense on the year, played a ranked opponent at a neutral site, and improved its numbers on rushing defense.
5. A lot of folks want to focus on the first quarter, when the offense went 3 and out twice and had negative yardage on both drives. But look at the offense after that:
52 total plays, 379 total yards on 9 possessions. Those 9 possessions ended with 5 touchdowns, 1 made field goal, 1 missed field goal, 1 punt, and halftime. That's absurdly efficient. Alabama ran 58 total plays and scored 54 points.
6. Some miscellaneous SEC championship game notes: Alabama has as many SEC championship game wins (7) as the rest of the West combined (LSU has 4, Auburn has 3). Nick Saban has won the last 9 "championship" games he's coached, counting national championships and SEC championships (5 SEC championships: 2009, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016; 4 national championships: 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015). Alabama is the first college football team since WWII to win 3 straight conference championships with 3 different starting QBs. Josh Jacobs' blocked punt TD (Derrick Gore blocked it) was the first in the history of the SEC championship game.
