...and it has nothing to do with Saban saying, "There is no depth chart!"

I bring this up because of an observation; something I've noticed during this summer camp.

Last night during drills, Mike McCoy was lining up in the slot position. That makes the 3rd position in our receiving corps he's lined up in (split end and wide receiver.)

Maze has lined up as a split end and also in the slot position. So has Hanks, so has BJ.

Alexander has lined up at the WR position as well as a split end.

Take heart in this fact Bamanation. At the end of the season I'm willing to bet not a soul will be able to tell you how many different formations/player personnel groupings we will have seen in the '08 season. Off the top of their head, that is...

Oh, did I mention we've lined up running backs in the split end position as well?

Gah, I'm so excited to see our offense this season!! RBs at split end? This offense is going to be fun to watch this year. :D

Remember the mismatches that moving DJ Hall to the slot made last year against the Vols? Heh. Think of all the possibilities now...

Maybe it's because I'm an optimist by nature, but for some reason I'm much more excited about our WR Corps this year vs last year (which featured 3 returning starters).

Is it just wishful thinking to believe this group of rookies and soph's can be just as (if not more) productive than the experience crew from 07? No question we have a more experienced OC, and JP has another season under his belt. But at the end of the season, will we have missed Hall, Brown, and Caddell?

No, it's not wishful thinking at all. There is quite a bit that has changed when it comes to our QB's and WR's in terms of productivity.

...and our TE's, and our RB's in terms of the passing game. :)

I have to admit, I am jacked up about the possibilities of our new offense this year. I know it will have to be tweaked here and there, but man....who would have thought you would see Bama lining up in 427 different offensive sets!!

I hate to be the guy in this thread that harks on the name guy. But where has Julio been lining up at the most?

Split End.

I was thinking about that this morning and wondering how many fans (not Bama fans in particular) know the difference between a SE and a WR.

I was taught the split end is the lone reciever on one side for receptions and misdirections.

True, often called the X receiver by us football geeks.
