🏈 Spring camp 2015: Tide through second of three scrimmages

Free BOL content: Tuesday Morning Thoughts

18.] RB Bo Scarbrough: If you were thinking Scarbrough might sneak up on Alabama opponents in 2016, his 132-yard rushing performance -- on just nine carries, no less -- in last Saturday's scrimmage likely made that impossible. And it's not like he wasn't already showing up on Heisman lists, anyway. If he stays healthy and on track, there's no reason Scarbrough can't become the next great Alabama back.

17.] DL Daron Payne: Thinking he'll be higher on this list come October, but have to start somewhere for a guy who didn't waste time impacting the rotation as a true freshman last season. He's officially a nose tackle, but unlike some who have played the position before him, Payne will prove capable of staying on the field in sub packages. Don't make the mistake of thinking Payne is just a first down two-gapper. In addition to controlling the point against the run, he's capable of providing some interior pass rush.

16.] DL Da'Shawn Hand: As we move inside No. 20, narrowing this list down gets tough. Hand is another guy who will make a push for Top 12 Tiders status once the season rolls around. Unlike the last two seasons, when his playing time was limited to obvious passing situations, the former five-star recruit will be asked to provide every down snaps. Based on the continued strides he's made physically, I'd say he's more than ready.

From Al.com:

— Defensive linemen Da'Shawn Hand and Dalvin Tomlinson weren't present during the open portion of practice.

— Alabama practiced its nhttp://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2016/04/alabama_practice_report_two_to.html#incart_river_indexickel defense. The first-team configuration was Reuben Foster and Rashaan Evans at linebacker, Marlon Humphrey and Minkah Fitzpatrick at cornerback, Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison at safety and Maurice Smith at nickel back.

— Jackson (leg) wasn't in the black non-contact jersey that he's been in throughout the spring.

— With Hand, Tomlinson and Jonathan Allen not out there, the first-team defensive line when Alabama practiced in its base defense was nose tackle Daron Payne and defensive ends Josh Frazier and Johnny Dwight.

Free BOL content: Practice report: Pair of Tide DL missing Wednesday

Here are several tidbits from the media viewing portion of Alabama's Wednesday practice session in Tuscaloosa:

- Defensive ends Dalvin Tomlinson and Da'Shawn Hand were not on the field during the two media viewing periods.

- Safety Eddie Jackson (leg) donned a crimson jersey for the first time this spring after wearing a black, no-contact jersey to begin the spring. He appeared to be the first-team safety in the team's nickel formation in the second period.

- Cornerback Marlon Humphrey was back to doing drills after sitting out of a few in Monday's ninth practice session. Humphrey was one corner in the Crimson Tide's nickel package drill, while Minkah Fitzpatrick appeared to be the other.

- The rest of the nickel formation was made up of Ronnie Harrison at safety, Maurice Smith at Star, Reuben Foster andRashaan Evans at inside linebacker and Ryan Anderson at outside linebacker.

- Anthony Averett and Kendall Sheffield were what appeared to be the second unit's corners. Tony Brown was at Star.

- Watching the offensive line, the first group was much of what we've seen recently in -- from left to right -- Korren Kirven,Lester Cotton, Ross Pierschbacher, Brandon Kennedy and Jonah Williams leading the group through drills.

- The second group was: Bradley Bozeman, Dallas Warmack, JC Hassenauer, Alphonse Taylor and Matt Womack.

'Freak' NT makes snapping difficult for Tide center

Pierschbacher has practiced at center in all nine of Alabama’s spring practices and seems to have found a new home in the middle of the offensive line. But the 6-foot-2, 319-pound defensive tackle Daron Payne has not made the move easy.

Payne, who will find himself in the starting lineup once again in 2016, received high praise from the Tide’s center.

“He’s a freak,” Pierschbacher said. “I think he ran like a 4.97 (40-yard dash), weighs more than me and he’s a stud in the weight room. So he makes me better, and I try to make him better, too. But it’s a challenge every play.

“We’ve seen guys like that go through. A'Shawn (Robinson), I went up against him every play last year, so I haven’t had it very easy the last couple of years, but it makes me better.”

Pierschbacher admitted learning to perfect the shotgun snap has been frustrating, but he won’t let it affect his play.

“You try not to think about it as much because that’s when you really mess up is when you think about it a lot,” Pierschbacher said. “Just focus on your job and work out there and try to command everyone else, too.”

Forgot about Anfernee. He is listed as #33, maybe a number change to 57 after Pettway's departure?

He was wearing #33, Monday.

Just one of those idle, early morning thoughts...

A few days ago a few of us were talking about the potential to see as many as nine, five stars in some defensive sets.
Over the years we've talked about how much time the defense spends in nickel.
It's safe to say we're going to see Rashaan playing inside a lot this fall.

So...that makes me think about Auburn. I wonder what it'll be like for one of their fans, a fan who follows recruiting, to see Rashaan and Reuben playing in the nickel.
