July 1, 2021
Prior to the July 2021 NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) policy change, major college football champions were defined by the Bowl Alliance, Bowl Coalition, BCS (1998–2013), and CFP (2014–2020) eras. Notable champions include:
Alabama (2020, 2017, 2015, 2012, 2011, 2009), Clemson (2018, 2016), LSU (2019, 2007, 2003), Ohio State (2014, 2002), and Florida (2008, 2006).
Key pre-NIL Championship Teams (BCS and CFP Eras):
Dominant dynasties in the modern pre-NIL era included Nick Saban's Alabama, Urban Meyer's Florida/Ohio State, and Dabo Swinney's Clemson.
